Influence on Comics

The early years of comics did not focus generally as much on superheroes and instead focused on action or adventure storylines. There were therefore numerous retellings of Jules Verne's work at this time in comic format. Jules Verne deserves some credit for his influence on the entire genre as comics are generally infused with a degree of science fiction. Although he wrote at the time in what he thought to be hard science fiction (hard science fiction is more firmly rooted in science as compared to soft soft science fiction) the advances in science have made his initial works somewhat softer as time has progressed. As an example Verne wrote at a time when space travel was impossible and he speculated on a number of methods of space travel, most of which would result in near instant death for the space travellers. Many of the earlier works though had influence on the equally soft science fiction in comics leading up until at least the 1960s. In the 2000s this resulted in a new genre of fiction called Steampunk. This genre is defined by applying equal parts of modern science to a Verne like model. For instance, a computer might be created with a system of steam pressure. This has influenced comics as well, for instance Lady Mechanika is based on steampunk principles. In light of the early influences of his work it was often the case in the early years of comic that classics were adapted directly into comic form, of which many of his more famous works got a treatment.
