He's better as a mutant because there is no connection to cyttorak and that way he can't be depowered.

Looking at it in the area of character development, there's more room for stories about his relationship with Charles Xavier if he is simply a mystically empowered man.

If he's a mutant he has to choose a side between Xavier's dream or Magneto's manifesto.

It's telling if he sought out power to be the equal of his little weakling step-brother, it also makes more sense if the X-Men have a major villain who doesn't happen to also be a mutant.

But losing his powers makes me angry because now he's not a major villian nor a threat to any villians since he turned good
