Dredd May Get A Sequel

Karl Urban recently talked to Spinoff about the possibility of a sequel to Dredd3D

Dredd (also known as Dredd 3D) might have been the best comic-based film of last year that no one saw in theaters. Based on the long-running UK 2000 AD character Judge Dredd, the film made just $13 million in the United States and $35.6 million worldwide off of a reported $50 million budget. However, while it was considered a bomb a the box office, the film has become a huge cult hit on DVD, Blu-ray and digital mediums.

Collider recently talked to star Karl Urban about Star Trek Into Darkness and brought up the possibility of a Dredd sequel.

“Interestingly enough, I did have breakfast with Alex Garland this morning,” Urban said. “It’s not off the agenda. Clearly everyone has woken up to the fact that an audience has found this movie and loves it. It’s entirely possible, and if people want to see another installment then they should be vocal about that, because, it can happen. The power of fandom can resurrect projects. In fact, that’s what happened with Star Trek. They weren’t going to do a third season until fans did a letter writing campaign and they continued that series.”

Dredd, which was written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later…, Halo) and directed by Peter Travis (Vantage Point), features a futuristic version of the United States where most of the east coasthas become one giant city called Mega-City One. A group called the Judges polices this city, acting as judge, jury and executioner on the spot. The movie follows Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) and his trainee Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) as they investigate a skyscraper of a slum and the Slo-Mo drugs being dealt out of there, they run into gang leader Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) who sends the entire building after them. A fantastic volley of violence follows. It’s kind of like The Raid, but with helmets, voice-controlled weapons, telepathy and drugs that slow down time.

Also has anybody seen the Judge Minty fan film? Is pretty awesome, even 2000AD themselves love it.

Wow, that fan film's quite impressive. Reminds me of a similar Killzone one.

I can't say I'm excited at the prospect of a sequel though. The first was merely alright, I'm not a fan of the character but I didn't really get a sense of Dredd and his world from it. It just felt like another post-apocalyptic action flick.

Dredd definitely deserves a sequel. It was a great comic film and it's a shame more people didn't see it.

@lone_wolf_and_cub: To true. Did you watch the fan film I posted?

@veshark: Yea I was shocked at how good it actually is.

To each there own but I really loved Dredd and think it's pretty unjust at how it did at the bix office.

@jonny_anonymous

Yeah, most Dredd fans seemed to have enjoyed the movie. I don't know, didn't quite click with me I suppose.

That would be fantastic! Dredd was severely underrated by almost everyone! This definitely deserves a sequel!

It wasn't that it was bad on a technical level, I just felt like it didn't click with me. I didn't feel invested in the character or his world; it just felt like another post-apocalyptic future, and Dredd felt like a conventional action hero. Bear in mind that I've never read anything Dredd in my life, so maybe that has something to do with it.
