First Time Fan, Sticking Around 0

About a year and a half ago I sat down to finally take in a little British Sci-fi show called "Doctor Who." I knew there was a huge history behind it that had been going on for ages, but I didn't know much beyond that.Cue present day and I have a couple sonic screwdrivers and a cardboard cutout of the TARDIS in my bedroom. You can say that I became a bit of a fan.So I sat down to read Judge Dredd, having come into the book knowing that there is this huge story behind it and that it has had a cou...

Truth be told, I had never read a Judge Dredd comic before, and, honestly, it would've been better if kept that way. I was not so sure if picking this up would be a good idea, but after reading the preview in Comic Book Resources, I got really interested. Unfortunately, what is shown in the preview is actually the best part of this comic.Getting to know a bit of Mega-City One was nice. There was a good description of the criminal population, Dredd's violent nature and the malfunctioning robots. ...

Before I review this, let me just say that before this issue I have never read a Judge Dredd comic. It isn't that I haven't wanted to, I just never have got around to it, so I am going in completely unbiased to the original material with the fresh eyes of a Dredd newby.Judge Dredd #1 contains a long story and a short story in the back. The first of which involves a plot that I honestly didn't quite follow other than some trees that grow fruit within minutes going wild and fruit exploding. This l...

I've always found Judge Dredd to be sort of a guilty pleasure, so when I heard IDW was coming out with an new series I was more than eager to pick this up. In the first issue we have a pretty simple reintroduction to Judge Dredd, and it's split into two different parts. The first part of the issue is the first part of a story arc where Judge Dredd is called in to take care of a string of robberies resulting from a malfunctioning tree that rapidly reproduces fruit. One of the robberies is a bit m...

Plot.Introduces Dredd to a new audience, with two self contained stories.Art.The art is very well done in both stories. The backgrounds are detailed, and the colors are vibrant.Rating: 4/5Story and Script."Ripe"Ripe is a very nice intro into the world of Dredd for a total Dredd newbie like myself. They give you the information you need, with out making it seemed forced. They didn't need to use paragraph after paragraph of exposition to explain the world. They did it nice and quick and got on wit...

Cover/Solicit - 5/5- Would I pick-up the comic based on the solicit/cover alone? Are the alternate covers appealing? Does the solicit/cover portray what happens in the issue?Art - 3/5- Do I personally like this artist's style? Does the artist stay true to the characters appearance?Colors/Ink/Lettering - 4/5- Does the work blend well with the artist? Is the coloring/inking enjoyable and easy to distinguish what's happening? Can I easily read the lettering?Layout/Flow - 5/5- Does the layout of the...
