Along with Jackie Earl Haley, I’m really glad to see Josh Brolin making such a comeback after being known mostly as child actor. And the two of them acting in comics-based movies makes their comeback doubly-pleasing. I had mixed feelings about NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MAN as a whole, but Brolin’s performance was a flawless stand-out. That whole part where he’s un-jams his gun while running from an attack dog in the creek was Grade A certified American bad ass. So I think it’s some brilliant casting to make him the grizzliest of the DCU’s grizzled heroes, Jonah Hex.
It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about this project, but Warner Bros recently a hi-res photo of Mr. Brolin in full Western regalia. I have a hunch that this the picture is that’s going to be used on the wrappers of the inevitable Slim Jim tie-ins. Right? ‘Cause half his face looks like jerky.
Unfortunately, it seems that production troubles may be the reason we haven’t heard much about this movie in a while. Brent Hinds, the front man of metal outfit Mastodon, has been voicing frustrations about the difficulty his band’s been going through over the score they made for JONAH HEX. They recorded work last fall that they’re still really proud of, but have had to re-record it to fit the numerous re-shoots and changing personnel. Apparently, the first composer they were working had to drop out due to delays, while the second one wants a more subtle underscore in favor of the driving heavy metal blast they put together.
What do you in the scarred-face Comic Vine community think about this? Are you stoked for JONAH HEX? Or is it not even on your map for the summer?
