mtharman's Jonah Hex #64 - Lovesick review

It's probably best not to know what happened that night.

Another classic Jonah Hex story that somehow has me interested within his own western series. Seeing how this gritty half-faced cowboy not only catches the wrong attention just about every single time we see him in one of his issues, but also manages to draw comic fans into the western world with his singled issue stories. It’s very unique how both Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmotti seem to put Jonah Hex into just about the same situation within their issues and doing little to make the difference between those stories.

Meaning that just about every story shows Jonah Hex riding into some remote town, hits up at a bar, and for reasons unknown attracts the wrong attention. Doing so little to change that story by focusing on just about every unkown situation and adding somethin new within this cliched storyelling that never seems to die out. With this issue we get an additional character to add some spice to the story known as Lovesick, her name is Rosa. I felt that Rosa’s character within this story was displayed perfectly with the likes of Jonah Hex. Of course every time I see Jonah and some local lady who gains the wrong attention interact with Jonah Hex; it’s naturally a predictable moment where our reclusive cowboy isn’t interested. But with both writers deciding to focus on something else with this uneasy interaction, we see what happens when this Rosa keeps insisting on gaining the affection from Jonah Hex as she naturally gains from the other local men.

I like the idea how both writers kept the basic Jonah Hex storyline of him riding into town as a supporting concept with the main focus onto something else, which is the uneasy relationship between Rosa and Jonah Hex. But what has me really enjoying this issue is the fact how there are scenes and facts left out that has you sitting alongside with Jonah Hex within this comic. It’s funny how Jonah Hex and I both agreed on how there was something funny about this Rosa, and you begin to realize how there are numerous red flags with Rosa to where something bad is bound to happen (which does of course).

Which takes me to where I have to say, “It’s probably best not to know what happened that night”.

Jonah Hex issue 64 is a classic, from the western gritty artwork that takes you into the western world to a unique form of storytelling that serves itself very well as a Jonah Hex short story. Even though a part of me feels that this type of storytelling is somewhat clichéd because of how we are constantly taken into the same concept, but it’s the fact that this story is the type of clichéd that probably never dies out and properly defines Jonah Hex’s character and gaining the respect from comic fans that has me giving this issue an up most rating.

Thankyou for reading and it’s best that this issue finds itself added to your collection and worth the fair price of 3 dollars for the classic western enjoyment that this comic respectfully gives.
