'The Wooden Sixgun!' from Jonah Hex no. 27 is a fine little tale that relates a story from Jonah's past.

While in a town hunting some fugitives, a boy witnesses Jonah gun them down. That night he runs away from home and meets Hex. Seeing his wooden sixgun, Jonah tells the boy about the wooden gun he had when he was a kid and the day he acquired his first real six-shooter.

The story is simple and well told with Hex learning at an early age not only some of the techniques of gun fighting, but also that criminals aren't necessarily worse than law men or even your own family.

I appreciated this story a lot because it could easily have been heavy-handed and preachy, but it wasn't. It's a key event in Jonah's life, but has a seemingly routine start and end to it.
