The Joker, Clown Prince of Crime, is Batman's arch-nemesis. An agent of chaos known for his malicious plots, wacky gadgets and insidious smile, he has caused Batman more suffering than any other villain he has ever faced. His origin, name, and true motivations remain a mystery.
I hope you didn't try to use that rotary dial telephone to call 9-1-1 if Red L.A.M.P. got hurt. That thing might be worth more than the first appearance of the Punisher in Amazing Spider-Man. The green and purple thing, ah, why I love comics. Giving entertainment to the fashion impaired. How about the infamous SKRULLS?!? Baron Helmut Zemo is one I believe wore the purple and green. I know at least one incarnation of Brainiac 's skin was green, can't remember if his duds were purple.

lolz. yup. i have no clue why she's dressed like that though. maybe she was working with the Joker and they decided to have matching costumes? either way it looks hideous. lol
I think it started with the Joker. The clothing/costume set. Brainiac definitely set the trend for the green skin and purple costume. Following Brainiac, there's the Skrulls, Impossible Man, Annihilus.... all aliens by the way.
Ever notice how a lot of the "cosmic" characters in Marvel have this red and blue color scheme. Terrax, Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel later, Quasar, Gladiator... that was probably just the times.
And that explains Spider-Man's success. He's really a cosmic being. Being cosmic explains his spider-sense, the ability to alter the timestream by changing the pre-destined events, like getting squashed by the Rhino...

and just to make sure that my post is completly useless, because I grew up with Barney I'll be the first to go on the record and say that he was just misunderstood. Poor Barney, all he wanted to do was sing, dance and educate little chillins with his half wit moronic ideas.
Going back to Kirby, the King established his idea that superheroes should be seen in brighter, positive colours, such as the primaries - Red, Yellow, Blue, and combinations thereof, because they reinforced the notion that these were positive-minded people trying to do good. Green and purple, meanwhile, in the tones availible back in the sixties, were much darker and more sinister, and therefore more appropriate for villains. Hence why your Mister Fantastic wears blue and white, and Doom is decked out in green and dark greys.
I actually have thought of this! Gah, that means we think alike! I, for one, love the green & purple together. It stands out. Anyone can do black. Fah! Be daring. Taunt the heroes! There's no need to be stealth. You're flamboyant and fabulous! Embrace it.
I think when Luthor created the Everyman Project, their colors were green & purple too probably because his super suit was but he didn't wear it in those issues.
Surprisingly I can't find any NFL references to a team using that color combo (on my mind since I'm going to talk comics while hubby watches the game).
You didn't mention MrsJ...Yup, I wear purple and green all the time...my wardrobe is full of different purples and greens...I have some Orange too. My town knows me as the Joker...I'm not even kidding.
As mentioned previously by another commenter, when the Riddler is written correctly he's a compelling and genuinely cerebral threat, who has (on occasion) outwitted even Batman. In reference to the memory loss--definitely an unfortunate plot device--there have been hints since Detective Comics #828 that Riddler remembers more about the Bruce-Batman connection than he's letting on to.
Back in the old days, green, purple, and gray were considered negative just as blue, red, and yellow were considered positive. That's why villains like the Joker, the Riddler, Poison Ivy, Sandman, Mysterio, the Green Goblin, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Bizarro, the Vulture, Scorpion, Impossible Man, Doctor Doom, Doctor Octopus, the Lizard, the Rhino, the Kingpin, Electro, and classic Catwoman follow that scheme. The superheroes on the other hand follow the primary colors such as Superman, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Blue Beetle, Daredevil, Spider-Man, Wolverine, the Fantastic Four, Cyclops, the Beast, Iron Man, the Flash, Firestar, Scarlet Witch, Captain America, Stargirl, and S.T.R.I.P.E.
don't you guys see it? purple and green, these are the most villainous colors ever. just take a look at their appearances in nature: the mantis is green, and this beast eats its husband after making love! and purple? purple is so evil that no animal dares to be purple. that's it. that explains it all. i'm good!
