You DO realize we're talking about a comic book character and COMIC BOOK insanity, not real world insanity, right? It's called overplayed REAL insanity, since it's a comic book super villain. This is why Joker is portrayed less "clowny" in The Dark Knight, because it's to keep his insanity at a more realistic level/style.

Clinically speaking, Joker is an obsessive compulsive, a psychotic, a sociopath, a sadist, (some say a masochist), has delusions of grandeur, and is perhaps a schizophrenic (not multiple personalities which the term is often mistaken for but rather not knowing the difference between reality and fantasy).

I'd give him more multiple personalities than being a schizo.

Sorry - I should clarify - schizophrenia is not multiple personality disorder as is so often erred; schizo is where you have problems with reality and fantasy. I'm not sure Joker has multiple personalities but he sure bends the rules regarding reality/fantasy in his mind!

I'm pretty sure we all know what a schizo is, no one bases the definition of schizophrenia on the Jim Carrey classic, Me, Myself & Irene, unless their dumb. I always had a theory that Joker had multiple personalities, some more brutal, some more comical, all of them aware of each other.

The psychiatrist as Arkham believes he's super sane but moraly bankrupt.

Of course, I have read that survivors of gunshot wounds to the head tend to suffer brain damage & his personality is more unhinged. I'd say he wasn't crazy before & just acting up on it to stay in his cozy privilaged Arkham jail cell that he can escape on a whim, but NOW he might have actualy snapped. I guess we'll have to wait for his return & see. The Joker is totaly an actor, like Count Olaf.

& maybe someone should teach Damien how to drive. lol. "What ambulence?" XD

To be honest, I don't buy it. He plans. He uses logic. I've never seen anything that actually says insane to me. He's just evil.

    Two-Face = Crazy
    Poison Ivy = Crazy
    Joker = Not Crazy

Didn't the Arkham Asylum book have to actually reinterpret him as having to reinvent his personality daily? If you ask me, the writer thought the same thing I'm thinking and decided to make him actually crazy in order for him to belong there.

    i think he's a total nut job.

Just because he uses logic and plans, doesn't mean he's not crazy.  The Joker takes joy in killing.  He also sees a distorted picture of reality.  He thinks life is a joke.  The character is as crazy as they come.

Mad, adj. Affected with a high degree of intellectual independence; not conforming to standards of thought, speech, and action derived by the conformants from study of themselves; at odds with the majority; in short, unusual. It is noteworthy that persons are pronounced mad by officials destitute of evidence that they themselves are sane.

Yes, Joker is insane.  "Insanity", you see, is not a psychological condition.  Insanity is a legal status bestowed on an individual by the court.  As Joker has been the regular guest of Arkham Asylum, I'd say it goes without saying that he has been declared 'Insane' multiple times.

As to what condition resulted in his being given that status, I really don't know.

He's a sociopath utterly devoid of morality or ethics, but he's not insane. In my opinion, Heath Ledger's portrayal in The Dark Knight did an incredible job of embodying that.

I think it's weird that some people think that just because Joker is smart and has ridiculously in-depth schemes means he's not insane. You can be insane/crazy and still be, you know, a genius or intelligent.

I think the Joker is super-sane, plain and simple. Of, course the strange about him being insane is the fact that he is a genius. And for the people who claim he acts insane so he can go to Arkham instead of jail.......really? A sane wouldn't dream going to Arkham. Well, expect maybe me,  but anyway. yeah Arkham worse then hell apparently. So if he wasn't crazy before the very first time he stepped through the Arkham doors, he is now. Arkham is crazy.
