I wonder sometimes. He could just act that way because he doesn't won't to go into a real prison, he knows if he acts that way he will just go into Arkham.

What are your thoughts?

Of Course, he's not 'sane' like everyone else, but he's not 'insane,' either. He is 'super-sane' able to place himself objectively in whatever situation with the mindset of taking whatever role is most adventageous to his master plans.

i think the joker is incredibily insane. but what makes him who he is, is the simple fact that he doesn't make apologies for it. he is an unapologetic madman. ...and i wouldn't change a thing

"Of Course, he's not 'sane' like everyone else, but he's not 'insane,' either. He is 'super-sane' able to place himself objectively in whatever situation with the mindset of taking whatever *role* is most advantageous to his master plans. "

Well said. The Joker's madness is practically a superpower-he can do things other people would simply never think of.

Remember when he tried to patent fish? That's not evil, but it is nutty as a fruitcake.

I'm sure the Joker is insane. I don't think a sane person would be out forcing people into a laughing fit if he was sane. His insane scemes speak for them selves.

Of course he's insane. If he wasn't then he wouldn't be as intresting as he is.

I don't believe the Joker is completely insane, he still has a speck of sanity in there.

#12 Posted by MrsJ (305 posts) - - Show Bio

The is a perfect scene in Batman/Judge Dredd where one of the evil Judges tries to control Joker's mind, but alas it isn't possible to control a mind as insane as his so the evil Judge is rejected access of the Joker's mad mind.

A very psycological point of view but no I do believe the man is truly insane due to the fact that his actions lack moral restraint of any kind and that he seems to do them more for pleasure than for any other reason his greatest pleasure lies in the chaos he creates not in profit or monotery gain.

#18 Posted by MrsJ (305 posts) - - Show Bio

Plus, no sane man would fight the Bat! Why do you think all the criminals of Gotham go to Arkham Asylum!?

#19 Posted by paranormal (43 posts) - - Show Bio

I think that somebody who kills thousands of peoples becaude he think it's fun surely isn't sane.

#20 Posted by Ralph (101 posts) - - Show Bio

Puddin'... I mean, Joker isn't sane. Not at all. Come on, a normal person can't kill a 14 years old kid with a crowbar if he's sane. But ya know... mine...er.. our J hasn't got only razor-cards, Smilex, mortal joy buzzers, and acid-squirt flowers. He has his mind. His mind is his most powerful 'gadget'. So, I don't think that even a high intelligent guy like Joker can ACT insane. It's impossible. Hey... could you be sane if you see yourself in a mirror and find yourself looking at a grinning, green-haired, white-skinned freak?

People who aren't insane don't pretend to be. Unless they are trying to stay out of trouble..like pleading insanity to get outta jail.Nobody acts insane to go to jail...time and time again.

theres not a chance joker is'nt crazy

#30 Posted by robert (1 posts) - - Show Bio

yes hes insane but in his own mind and world he probly dosent think he is and knowing this he could change him self to a sane person, like he dose when he thinks the bats dead. so yeah hes insane but he hasent forgot how to be sane and i think if he wanted to he could be sane

#31 Posted by NightFang (9904 posts) - - Show Bio

I agree with you Joker now how and want to be sane but as long as bats alive he will always be crazy in fact he's been sane four times.

once when he thought he killed Batman in a death trap and again when Batman put him in a Lazarus Pits after being shot and the Martian Manhunter rewires the Joker's brain to create momentary sanity and he was rendered sane by a nuclear war that deprives all super beings of their powers.

There is no doubt that Joker is insane, but I do believe that he overplays his insanity so as to create a justification for his actions (and avoid death).

#37 Posted by paranormal (43 posts) - - Show Bio

Of course the Joker's crazy, but then again is there someone realy "sane".

I think he's just a "little" bit crazier than the rest of us, thans to his "bad day" (if you read the Killin' Joke you sure know wat i'm talking about)

#38 Edited by likalaruku (759 posts) - - Show Bio

He's very sane, just imoral & an apathetic anarchistic atheist with high intelligence & a heavy dose of sadomasochism. He has to be sadistic because he said murder is better than sex, he has to be masochistic because he really really seems to enjoy & expects to be thoughrouly pummled, then he laughs & smiles as he's dragged back to Arkham. That's not insanity, that's fetish.

& it looks like he's on trial for this very subject once again. Batman seems pretty confident of his sanity. I think Batman might be the one that's actually crazy. But my personal deffinition for crazy is "Sees things & hears voices that tells one to do things" like Nny from JtHM.

Lord Shazam says:

I think he is, because Arkham is a h*llhole compared to a normal prison.

"
Hardly. The inmates are separated from others, making Joker's life more protected than it would be in a normal prison. In "The Devil's Advocate" (which is, I believe the only time he has been sent to a normal prison)  a beefed up fellow death row inmate tries to beat the shit out of him or maybe even kill him. In Arkham, the inmates are just cooky and pretty much fear Joker. None of them would try to kill him. Charaxes, Croc and Zsasz are exceptions, but they try to kill pretty much anyone and lack a sense of self-preservation.

Joker himself has admitted he feels Arkham is a place for him to "unwind". Kind of like a resting place.

He may be insane, but his insanity is unique. Call it super-sanity if you will. He has withstanded several mind control attempts and has achiveved magnificent scientific achievements. Martian Manhunter, for example, describes his mind "a raging storm". Then again, he thinks he can talk to birds or tries to copyright fish. Not your average madman.

The Joker is insane, he thinks that death threatening pranks are funny. He is just a joker gone wrong, he takes his jokes a little too far but I truly believe he doesn't know he is insane. I think the Joker is just trying to be funny, in his twisted, deranged and insane way.

Hello, I am new here and I couldn't resist replying to this post.  To answer the OP, it can be helpful to define "sane" and "insane."

In the real world, insanity means different things depending on the context.  Legal insanity is generally about the ability to tell the difference from right and wrong or the ability to understand the consequences of his actions or something like that.  By this definition, in the real world, the Joker would not be insane.  He knows what he does is illegal, hurtful, and "wrong," but does it anyway.

In clinical use, "insanity" is not really used any more, but he could be diagnosed with some things, like delusions of grandeur, psychopathy, antisocial personality disorder, narcissism, sadism (although I think this is used more in fetishistic terms), obsessive compulsive disorder or even the very lame histrionic or borderline personality disorders,  or some other stuff I can't think of right now.  I don't think he is psychotic, because he is not "out of touch" with reality.. the furthest he goes is delusional.. but he doesn't hallucinate or hear voices or anything like that.

In the real world, it is perfectly possible to have mental illness and be aware of it, unless you are psychotic.  The term for this is "insight."  I think the Joker doesn't know if he is insane, only because I don't think it would be consistent with his character to have bothered with gaining "insight."  He doesn't know because he doesn't care.

We can speculate how "insanity" is defined in the DC universe.  Judging from the population of Arkham Assylum, "insanity" might simply be the desire to obtain what is not possible without the expense of human life.  Really though, "insanity" might also just be poorly defined in DC, and the question of "is the Joker insane" is ultimately unanswerable for readers unless you want to rely on the opinions of respectable characters in the comic.  In the Devil's Advocate story, Joker seemed confident that he could prove insanity by smashing his own face on to a table.  Assuming the Joker is smart (I assume it), and that in most situations he would have been right about how easy it is to "prove" insanity, the term "insanity" is sloppily defined in the DC universe at best.  You're insane if you just hurt yourself? That is kinda weak.

I think according to the DC universe, he is insane, because that is pretty much how "reliable" judgements of his character have judged him (except for the case of supersanity) by doctors, Batman, and peers.  Unfortunately, "sane" and "insane" were not defined for the readers of the DC universe, so we can't be really sure how these people have come to this conclusion.

Furthermore, blahblah blah blah blah ok im done. heehee!

#42 Posted by Firestormnuclerman (2097 posts) - - Show Bio

He's insane in the sense he is beyond normal psychopaths,  will never feel remorse for what he does, has no rules, and won't stop acting like a savage as long as Bats is still around.

Although not insane in the sense he's unaware of right and wrong, and the consequences of his atrocious actions. He's well aware what he does is wrong yet he still acts as a Savage.

Anyone who doesn't believe that Joker is insane is bordering on delusional or is heavily misinformed. It took Martian Manhunter a huge effort to buy the JLA somewhere from 10-15 SECONDS to psychically induce sanity in him to save the universe or something. If what I hear about MM's psychic powers are true, then having HIM strain to make Joker "sane" is solid, irrefutable proof to me that Joker is indeed crackers. Here's the proof too.

Well, I'm delusional or heavily misinformed then. I don't back any comic involving blue or red superman, the late 90s were a drag on the Big Two. Joker portrays himself as insane to make others think he is insane. There's a "method to his madness". Everything is meticulously planned out. He is a genius, and under-rated in his intelligence. Almost in the same vein as a criminal will use the insanity plee to abuse the legal system.

Read The Killing Joke, or the one about him trying to patent his own brand of fish, or the one where he's trying to kill people because his face wasn't put on a brand of stamps of dead celebrities, or the one where he admits he loves Harley and he'll miss her just before bursting into laughter, sending her into the sky on a rocket to her doom. How about the fact he admits he can't remember his past the same way at anytime even to himself. How about the fact he finds his own inner fears hilarious?
