Which is it? I prefer Killing Joke, it's fantastic (and Mr J was pretty damn sexy in it)
Joker
Character » Joker appears in 4237 issues.
The Joker, Clown Prince of Crime, is Batman's arch-nemesis. An agent of chaos known for his malicious plots, wacky gadgets and insidious smile, he has caused Batman more suffering than any other villain he has ever faced. His origin, name, and true motivations remain a mystery.
Best Joker story ever told
I don't want to be the zillionth fanboy who agrees The Killing Joke is one of the best; so I'll be original and say The Laughing Fish was brilliant, too =D
Plus Arkham Asylum: A serious house on a serious Earth.
okay now seriously after watching TDK im kinda interested in the joker. but from all the stories i remember i thought he was just a clown prankster type not an amazing sadistic psychopath.
can someone help me and guide me to where or what comics the joker is a lot like the one in the movie.

Killing Joke is the definitive Joker story. Alan Moore's depiction is spot-on, if not a little creepy.

.. Heath Ledger got his Joker inspiration from 'he Dark Knight Returns', 'The Dark Knight Strikes Again' and 'The Killing Joke'.
okay so basically them three are the ones to read.
im not a DC fan at all and the only thing i know about the joker is the stuff from the cartoons and the old jack nicholson batman movie but i found the new 2 batman movies very intriguing and im kinda interested in reading up on the joker now. so thanks.

Btw as far as Batman is concerned you shoudl really read Year One and Long Halloween: the latter features Mr J.
The Killing Joke is the greatest comic I've ever read. Bolland's art and Moore writing is perfection, no other work has presented the Joker abosulte like in the pages of TKJ.
Of course anything written by Paul Dini featuring is also very very good. Detective Comics #826, Case Study in Batman: Black and White vol. 2, and Laughter After Midnight in the Batman Adventures Annual are my favorite Joker comic stories of his. He best knows how to mix the Joker's comedic and horrific elements.
I'm more of an "out with the old, in with the new" type, so I'll say Arkham Asylum ASHOSE or Batman 663, Slayride, Jellybean Death Trap, Salvation Run, & Batman 66, Lovers & Madmen, Batman RIP, Gotham Emergency, & Dark Detective.
