    11/24/10Green Lantern: Mosaic, Vol. 1-2(Blog) (Forum)Green Lantern: Mosaic(Back) (Next)

We all have trade paperback (TPB) collections we'd like to see. Here's one of mine:

Proposed Title:Green Lantern: Mosaic, Vol. 1, ...Vol. 2.
    Alternate Title:
    1. Green Lantern: Origin of the Mosaic (for V1)
    2. Green Lantern: Mosaic (for V2)
    Vol. 1 Collecting 11 Issues:
    • Green Lantern (1990) #13-17
    • Green Lantern: Mosaic #1-6
    Vol. 2 Collecting 12 Issues:Green Lantern: Mosaic #7-18.
    Covers: (click to enlarge)
Vol 1 TPB Cover: Green Lantern (1990) #14
Vol 1 TPB Cover: Green Lantern (1990) #14
Vol 2 TPB Cover: GL: Mosaic #18
Vol 2 TPB Cover: GL: Mosaic #18

    About the TPB:

Some six years after The Thing wandered Battleworld, in Rocky Grimm, Space Ranger, John Stewart patrolled the Mosaic, on Oa.

The first TPB would collect the first eleven issues of that story, from a new beginning in Green Lantern #13, to the four issue "Mosaic" story arc in GL #14-17, to GL: Mosaic #1-6. The second TPB would collect Green Lantern: Mosaic #7-18. For the covers, I'd go with Green Lantern #14 for Volume One, and Green Lantern: Mosaic #18 for Volume 2. They're both shots of John Stewart towering over others. That seems appropriate for where the story goes.

John gets the power of a Guardian.
John gets the power of a Guardian.

I always thought Green Lantern: Mosaic was a cool title, but at the time, I think it got cut a little short. Stewart evolved into something a little more than human, and it seemed like that was supposed to go somewhere, but instead, it wrapped up with #18 - just a month after the destruction of Coast City, and two months before Hal went over the edge in Emerald Twilight... In fact, now that I look at the timing of it, I'm left wondering if John Stewart wasn't heading towards becoming Parallax, before DC decided to have Hal fill that role, in connection with Reign of the Supermen. I always thought it was weird that Green Lantern was involved with Reign, so it being a sudden change from where Mosaic was going would make a lot of sense to me... I could be wrong, of course. Either way, I'd love to see these two TPB's come out, collecting the whole Mosaic saga.

Would U Buy It? Let me know in the comments, and thanks for reading.
*UPDATE July 17, 2022: I don't commit most creator facts to memory, so I had forgotten that Gerard Jones is the guy that was convicted of having child porn on multiple electronic devices. So, the probability of his work being reprinted is nil. Too bad for us readers, because GL: Mosaic was a cool read. There are consequences for crime though, and if comics have taught us anything, it's that misdeeds must be paid for.

    More WUBI:

Back/ Next#Which WUBI will it be:
Back:60.Thing, The: Rocky Grimm, Space Ranger.
Next:62.Guy Gardner: The Way of the Warrior.

    Thanks again!

@Sexy Merc: I have the four issue "Mosaic" arc from GL #14-17, all of the GL: Mosaic series, and I have GL #4, but I don't have GL #5-8 or #13.  I'd still buy this trade though, because I really liked this storyline.

    @Theodore:

I recommend the back issues.  It's like I say about cancelled series: it will ultimately be disatisfying, because it was cancelled, but it's a fun ride getting to that point. ;)

@Avenging-X-Bolt: John Stewart is an excellent character.  I used to have the issues of Green Lantern where he was the main GL, as they were coming out.  I wouldn't mind seeing those get collected into trades either.

@tensor: You have all of the issues?  I'm missing some of the earlier GL issues, as noted in a comment above.  Mosaic was awesome though.

It seems a little big for TPB's considering what DC usually puts out. I think it'd be more likely to see the Green Lantern issues collected in a 'Prelude to Mosaic' or something and then the Mosaic series collected in 2 volumes of 9 issues each.

Either way I'd probably buy this. I have all the back issues of Mosaic anyways, but you can never have enough Mosaic.

Mighty Monarch: You're probably right on the grouping - I could definitely see that Prelude to Mosaic TPB. I went with two 14-issue volumes, because at this point, the story is so old it has a low sales probability anyway. If it were collected, I think modern fans would look much more kindly on two volumes than they would three. The compendium finally seems to be doing well, as far as how it is bound, so I could maybe even see this as one massive volume, and more likely to sell. I personally wouldn't be a fan of the bigger book, but I could see DC going for it more readily than two or three separate volumes. Price is a factor hindering any of them.

If I didn't already have all these, then yes I would easily buy this. Mosaic was really good, if something like this was to ever come out I would highly recommend it.

Oo! Oo! Straighten me out, RScottH08: Do #5-8 &13 relate to the Mosaic? I wasn't completely certain, from the covers.

@master_wright: Ever since I did this WUBI, I have held to the notion that John Stewart was headed towards becoming Parallax, before DC changed their minds and made Hal Jordan the villain. I think it's that sudden change of mind that cut Mosaic short. I could be wrong, but if I am, why does the timing of the two cause it to make so much sense?

Update 11/1/12: Okay, I did WUBI #81 for Green Lantern: A Guy & His Gnort yesterday, and realized I had screwed up for the GL: Mosaic trades. I originally had Green Lantern #4-8 included in the first volume, and had the two volumes at 14 issues apiece, but the existing TPB, Green Lantern: The Road Back, already collects GL (1990) #1-8. So there is no need to collect those issues again. I deleted 4-8, and split the remaining issues up so that Volume 1 has 11 issues, and Volume 2 has 12 issues. GL #13 is a "double-sized spectacular," so the two volumes would be about the same size. With issues 4-8 gone, I debated whether to keep #13, since that leaves it as the only issue not marked "Mosaic," or whether I should move it to the end of the GL: A Guy & His Gnort TPB. I decided that since the cover to #13 implies the beginning to a new direction, and it does include John Stewart, I would leave it as the start to GL: Mosaic, Volume 1.

This should have been collected a long time ago, and it's a crime that it hasn't been yet. This series is legendary for a reason. I'd definitely buy it.
