In Hellblazer John doesn't seem like a fan of Heaven or Hell. He fights demons for humanity (often referred to as a humanist), even though he doesn't seem to like people, and throws his friends under the bus. What is his goal or motivation in doing what he does?

The thrill. He's an addict. He tries to do good things, though.

He really doesnt have a goal....he does what he does either because of a request from a friend (who later dies), or just cause he coincidently stumbles upon it.....he's just out there....a lot of the time he's the one impacted first before striking and really i associate that to original sins.....

i get what you mean, though. john's motivations never really are clear, apart from just to satiate his need for the unusual. he's literally a misanthrope and a humanist at the exact same time, lmao.i think his motivations are meant to be ambiguous , though. adds more mystery to the character.
