I hadn't read any Constantine when I saw the movie. Honestly I enjoyed it, I like Keanu and am looking forward to John Wick 2. As far as a direct adaptation it's not good, but honestly I'm not sure why I expect filmmakers to give a shit or to make exact copies of the original canon material.
As much as I'm disappointed by comic films not being straight adaptations, or having horrible fight scenes like say Nolan's Batman films etc... I try to remember Michael Bay and his version of "Transformers" and how cringeworthy they are coupled with his new "Ninja Turtles" that while being given horrendous reviews they announce the trilogy is in production. M. Knight's "The Last Airbender" and how it failed to even pronounce the character's name as they were in the original show on top everything else that made it a horror show. I think about G.I.JOE and Marlon Wayans. The latest MCU movies like Ultron being little more than a 2 hour trailer for the next film like Civil War... Even that Universe has become a bit misguided from its wonderfully unexpected Iron Man roots.
Sure Constantine could have been a lot better in a purist sense. Unwatchable? Horrible? I think far from it. It's a good popcorn film that could have been amazing had they known how to do it. However, it's far from the butchered garbage we often get.
People got imo "good" when "great" was the expectation and when you expect so much and get something that falls short, it's thrown in the "horrible god awful" bin I think out of an emotional response.
