Each week we like to open the package of a cool comic collectible to see how cool it really is. We actually took last week off to recover from the massive Darkseid action figure. This week's figure is the guy moving up the ranks in the DC Universe thanks to the New 52 tweaks being made, John Constantine.
This Signature Collection figure is part of the MattyCollector line of exclusive figures. It was the Club Infinite Earths Figure of the Month for November and if you're a subscriber, it gets sent automatically. Like other figures in the line, it comes in a plane white box with just the name. Inside is the figure in the packaging you see above. The back has some artwork and a brief bio.
Constantine, as you know, is the lead in the (sadly soon to be canceled) HELLBLAZER series. He has been moving around the New 52 DCU as the 'leader' in JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK. The cancellation of his long running series will lead to a new series in the next 'wave' of New 52 titles, CONSTANTINE written by Robert Venditti with art by Renato Guedes.
How does the figure look out of the package?
== TEASER ==I'm a little torn on how I feel about this figure. He is cool looking. The disheveled look of his tie is a nice touch. The biggest problem I have are his arm joints and hands. Trying to position his arms a little shows the seams in his arms. These figures don't usually come with accessories so you have to wonder what the purpose of having these hand molds are. He isn't going to be holding onto anything. It's also a shame he didn't come with a cigarette. But we all know smoking is bad. Still, this is an "adult collector" figure so why not make him come with what he's known for?
There is some nice little touches of detail on his coat. Rather than make a plain trenchcoat, some thought and effort was put in. The same can be said for his pants.
This is a simple figure but that doesn't mean he's not cool. Honestly, I never thought I'd actually have a Constantine figure. The fact that this was even released before his new, more mainstream comic is surprising. Despite the minor flaws, it's a cool figure.
How does he fit in with other figures? Well, we still have a certain figure lying around so why not put him to use?
How can you get this figure? You might want to keep an eye on his page at MattyCollector.com. I mentioned it was the figure of the month back in November but instead of saying "sold out," the page page says "coming soon." Sometimes they end up with extra inventory and sell the figures again. The other place is eBay. Doing a search will show quite a few with an average price of $20, which is fitting.
That's it for this week. What's coming next week? I still have a few sitting around waiting to be showcased so stay tuned to find out what's next.
