American comic book artist
John Cassaday was born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1971. A self-taught artist, he had an education in film-making and worked for a time directing TV news before leaving his home state. He now lives in New York City.
Cassaday's first appearance in comics occurred in 1995 with a story in Caliber's NEGATIVE BURN. In 1996, he did some work on GHOST for Dark Horse and then became lead artist on DESPERADOES. By 1997, he was working on mainstream comics such as ALPHA FLIGHT, TEEN TITANS, UNION JACK and THE FLASH.
Among his most critically acclaimed endeavors are his run on CAPTAIN AMERICA and on Joss Whedon's highly successful ASTONISHING X-MEN, but his breakthrough project was PLANETARY with Warren Ellis. Cassaday went back to illustrating Cap in an issue of FALLEN SON: THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN in 2007. He also did covers for Joss Whedon's SERENITY: THOSE LEFT BEHIND for Dark Horse and Guy Ritchie's GAMEKEEPER for Virgin Comics.
Presently, he produces the variant covers for ZORRO and Mark Waid's new mega-hit, IRREDEEMABLE, both published by Dynamite Entertainment. Additionally, John is producing the covers for THE COMPLETE DRACULA, Leah Moore and John Reppion's adaptation of Bram Stoker's original story. Another Dynamite project he continues to be a part of is THE LONE RANGER, not only being the cover artist, but the art director as well.
Last but not least, he illustrated the graphic novels in the I AM LEGION trilogy by Fabien Nury for Humanoids. The three books are now being re-published in an eight-issue comic book format by Devil's Due. Cassaday always manually inks his own pencils and is usually colored by Laura Martin.
