    10/8/10JLApe(Blog) (Forum)JLApe.WUBI #18.

We all have trade paperback (TPB) collections we'd like to see. Here's one of mine:

    Proposed Title:JLApe.
    Collecting 9 Issues:
    • Legends of the DC Universe #19.
    • JLA Annual #3.
    • Batman Annual #23.
    • Aquaman Annual #5.
    • Wonder Woman Annual #8.
    • Flash Annual #12.
    • Superman Annual #11.
    • Green Lantern Annual #8.
    • Martian Manhunter Annual #2.
    Covers: (click to enlarge)
    TPB Cover: JLA Annual #3
    TPB Cover: JLA Annual #3

JLApe seems sort of silly (although eclipsed in absurdity byMarvel Apes) but I like that it's all one story, and I've always wanted to read the whole thing. I can go for a little bit of absurdity every now and again.

For the cover, although I've always liked Superman Annual #11, I think the cover to JLA Annual #3 would be a better choice, as it shows the ape forms of the JLA.

Would you buy it? Let me know in the comments, and thanks for reading.

No.  It just seed silly to me.  I only buy trades of books I really love and plan to read more than once so I don't wreck the issues.  I do have some of these issues but haven't read them all yet.  The ones I have are not that good.

@Liberty: That's exactly the reason I would want this TPB - because I can only find a couple of the issues, so I haven't read the story.  I just want a collection so I can read the whole story.  My only concern with this TPB is that it would have an exorbitant price.  The trade price is usually about the same as if you paid for the comics at cover price*.  Since these were annuals, the TPB would likely be priced higher than I'd want to pay.  That's when finding it used on Amazon is a plus. :)

(*Except for older storylines, which have to be recolored for the newer paper, and cost way more than any TPB should.)

@cbishop: Things like this I but at conventions.  I have my nine pulls and then everyone in a while I go to a convention and buy a few cases.  You can still get comics for about a quarter a piece in the same condition you would get them from your pull.  I always look around every booth and come back to the diamond in the rough dealer who is willing to make a deal if I buy a case or more.  Buy the time I'm done I have usually bought vast amounts of great books in great condition.  That I only paid around a quarter a piece for.  I own over 5,000 books and have read about 4,000 of them.  Some I have read a few times times.  Depending how good they were.  This is the best way to buy books.  Sometimes I will have to find an issue to fill a series but I can get just about anything by saveing my money and making a large purchase at one time.  I had no or little interest in the ape stories so that is why I haven't gone nuts about getting them.

I'm really glad you didn't say "that is why I haven't gone ape about getting them." lol

I'm right there with ya on buying cheap books.  Thanks to 10 cent sales, quarter and dollar bins, I have many, many, many comics.  I did a guestimate for someone's thread awhile back, and figured I have around 15,000 comics, not including trades.  I haven't figured those out, but I have somewhere between 300 and 600 trades and hardcovers.  I get a lot of my trades at used book prices, and I've hardly ever paid full price for a hardcover.  The exceptions being the volumes of The Spirit Archives (<--no CV page?!) that I have, Son of Superman (wish I'd waited for the TPB), an Absolute something-or-other, and I paid a whopping $50 for a collection of the original Fighting American stories.

Are you using long boxes or short boxes?  If short, then I need to re-estimate.

About 5,000 lol.  About half my collection is in storage in another state, and probably most of the half I have with me I haven't read.  In the last several years, I either haven't had the room or haven't had the time to get to the back issues in the boxes.  I've only been able to keep up with the current stuff, and that just barely.  I keep buying stuff tho', thinking, "I want to read this whole story at some point."  <shakes head> That's stopped for right now, but I really need to go through the boxes at this point and get rid of some stuff. <sigh> Another time.

No, but my girlfriend absolutely would.  She reads and rereads my "Chimpulse" issue again and again.

@Mainline: I think this is just kind of a fun idea, although I think Marvel went a bit overboard with the Marvel Apes idea.  Secret Origins #40 (May '89) was an all-simian issue, and had an interesting text piece about the history of gorillas/monkeys in comics.  They're just a comic cliche staple, and every good comic universe should have at least one talking ape in it. lol

No I agree, I rank Gorilla Grodd higher than most Flash fans I think, and I love fun gimmicky issues like Pet Avengers... but if I recall correctly, not all of these ape stories were "fun" per se... it was a pretty straight-faced story taking the concept slightly too seriously?  It's been a long time so I could be recalling wrong.

@Mainline: I haven't actually gotten to read this story yet, but from what I remember of the solicits, it was a straight-faced story - basically about Gorilla City attacking the JLA?  I have always loved the Gorilla City concept, and think it should be used more, but one of my favorite gorilla characters was Erik Larsen's "Brainape."  He was around long enough for everyone to sneer and say he was a cheap imitation of Grodd... and then Larsen revealed who the brain belonged to. lol  HITLER!  The ape body has since been destroyed, and the brain's running around on it's own, with four brain stems it uses like arms and legs.  Hellboy whopped him a good one in a crossover (which is where we found out it was Hitler's brain). lol

I was actuallly talking about this crossover with a pal earlier and lamenting the lack of a paperback. I'd buy it.

@The Qu: Thanks, Qu!  I don't know what else I can say about this TPB: I just think it would be a fun read. :)

The site redesign had messed this blog up for a bit, and I couldn't get into it to edit it. So for a brief time, I had redone this blog as a list, and these are the comments from that list (the list is now deleted):

    Who:Date/Time:Comment:
    kfhrfdu_89_76k6/7/14 @10:52amYES!!! (Manic laugh!)
cbishop6/7/14 @8:54pm@kfhrfdu_89_76k: Yeah, I just think it would be fun.
    wildvine6/14/14 @6:05pmYesly
cbishop6/14/14 @6:10pm@wildvine: Yeah, it would be fun. I think this storyline is a secret pleasure for a lot of readers, and DC just hasn't realized it yet. lol :)

We now return you to your regularly scheduled blog comments. -cb

@kfhrfdu_89_76k: Why does it feel out of the blue? I was finally able to get into the blog to edit it (I had been locked out of it since the site redesign). So I edited it, and added the comments from the list I had made to replace this blog (see just above your comment).

@kfhrfdu_89_76k: I try to keep everything lol. Yeah, I think I'm going to bounce back-and-forth between the Dick Tracy pic and this one, which I have dubbed "Dark Tracy." muah-ha-ha-ha-haaaa.
