For those of you who don't know who Jezebel Jet is, she's Batman's new girlfriend...

I don't mind that Bruce is with a Black woman now. I like interracial relationships and all, but it's Jezebel's name that has me a little... annoyed. There's some history behind the name. It's a stereotype used mainly for Black slave women (or maybe Black women, in general) that have an insatiable desire for sex, but only with White men, preferably their White slave owners. A 'Jezebel' doesn't have a taste for Black men. It's kinda messed up that they would name this Black woman Jezebel, and pair her up with Bruce Wayne, a White man... They could have given her any other name but this. Janet. Sharice. Monica. Jennifer. But they had to give her a name with an unpleasant history behind it, pertaining to the disrespect toward Black women... I don't like that at all... >_<

Any thoughts!?

why automatically associate the name Jezebel with the worst connotations?

i mean, take a look at the history of the name and you'll find out that Jezebel is the name of a queen of ancient Israel. Her story is told in 1st and 2nd Kings. She is introduced as a Phoenician princess, the daughter of King Ithobaal I of Sidon, who marries King Ahab. She turns Ahab away from the God of the Israelites and of the Jews (being the inhabitants of Judah in this context) and toward the worship of Phoenician god, Baal. Ahab and Jezebel let temples of Baal operate in Israel, and the pagan religion receives royal patronage.

From a biblical and Christian point of view, a comparison to Jezebel would suggest that a person would be a pagan or an apostate masquerading as a servant of God, who by manipulation and/or seduction misleads the saints of God into sins of idolatry and sexual immorality, making them ineffective. From a Christian point of view, It has also been used to refer to those who challenge evidence and belief in God.

there are many different views, so just grabbing onto one of the many attributes of a name doesn't seem productive in the least to me, i'll wait and see what the character is like myself before deciding my views on her, labeling her under a stereotype just because of a name just seems stupid

I thought it only had one meaning, and that pertaining to Black women. I didn't know about all the other stuff. It's still kinda messed up, though. If you think about it. I didn't say that she was exactly what her name signifies. I just felt it was messed up to give her such a name, based on the situation she's in... I don't find it stupid, or random. It's just something that bothered the hell outta me... They could have named her anything else, but that. You could raise plenty of questions from this, though. Maybe DC named her that for what you came up, or maybe they named her that for what I came up with... That's just me, pimptightâ„¢.

Jezebel was the enemy of God and his children in the Bible and her death was prophecied, The term used as a moniker for black slave woman and what not is new tome but not surprising.

I see no redeeming qualities for the name and personally don't think Bruce deserves her, jacked up name and all.

Also you have to understand who is writing the bulk of the stories editing them and who they are catering to. if this character jezebel offends you you're probably not the target audience. And if the name doesn't offend you maybe you don't see the significance and symbolism the character, name and juxtaposition therein pose or door three you don't care because you are the target audience.

here comes the hate mail.

Don't get me wrong. I like Jezebel. I just don't like her name. That's all...

But Sling, you brought up the fact that Jezebel's death was prophesied in the Bible. Maybe that means something regarding the character in Batman's life. Maybe she will die later on in this current run. Who knows?

Either way you look at, the name doesn't signify anything positive, based on it's complete history... Just something that make women look bad, or something...

In popular culture it is used to denote a loose woman. maybe the connotation will change, but as it were I am not thrilled about the first black girlfriend Bats has having the name.

When Selena is the name they give his White girlfriend#204

Selena is of the moon. A symbol of unnatainable beauty in poetry, connected to women from grecian philosophy, and it's affect on the oceans tides, also prime representative of the night and cats are nocturnal hunters. Oh, and it's big beautiful and white.

Thats just off the top of the dome no in depth research for the answer.

But I brought her name up as a point that names have purpose especially in literature and culture/ethnicity does as well.

DC is the only company I know that would do that... Knowing this, I shouldn't even let this surprise me, but it does, anyway.

What's the connotation behind Selena?

Well, then. That bothers me even more... That DC would give a White woman a name with a positive connotation, but a Black woman with a negative one... WTF!? Where's the sense in that bullsh!t? Seriously...

I don't know your age or how long you been collecting comics, but this is old hat bro.

I been reading comics for 21 years. I am 28. This kind of subversive imagery has been in comics as long as I've read them( and other media as well) and claims to get better but at it's root it stays essentially the same. These issues go much further back than comics and wil lmaintain IMO until something drastically different happens. So be aware of it catalogue it but don't let it poison you.

Frederick Douglas said once he learned to read and was educated to plight of the people around him he would of have rather been as dumb as a beast of the field. It is an old poison but you (we) can beat it. Simply call it out if you suspect, with no malice but with a forthright attitude. Use your voice to educate others. You will be shunned and rejected but every now and again someone will see what you see and see it's wrong and the effects of it.

Talia Ghul unleashed the League of Assassins (the ones who can turn into man-bats) on her while she was flying home in her private jet.

Not necessarily. Until we see a body (or a Black Lantern), I'm unconvinced. :P
