Jean Grey
Character » Jean Grey appears in 8002 issues.
Jean Grey was one of the five original X-Men. An omega-level mutant telepath and powerful telekinetic, Jean has gained near limitless powers as a recurrent host of the Phoenix Force. She is known for her return from death and as the wife of Cyclops.
Why so much hate for Jean Grey?
As I go through all those forums i realized how many people just hate Jean, and I do not understand why.
I have always loved Jean. I know writers had made her look sometimes helpless, which annoyed me so much. I mean she is so powerfull! How come Magneto is such a big deal whn he only can control metal, she can control any object.
It also hate how people love Emma. Its not that i hate her, shes okay, but she just annoys the hell out of me. Yes i know you dont care about anyone just yourself ... oh no wait you do care .. borring! Everybody loves her with Scott. But Jean has been through so much more with him, and noone seems to care anymore.
Damn i sound depressing .. so anyway why do you hate her? Or if you like leave some love!
" How come Magneto is such a big deal whn he only can control metal "
Magneto does more than just controlling metal. Also, alot of why he is a big deal would be his character and personality is one of the most interesting in comics.
I'm not sure that Jean is hated or why she would be. Guess I hadn't noticed. She's the original lady of the X-Men and will always have a special place among them.
I really love Jean, she is an amazing character. I don't really care about the bad stuff people say about her, since they do it to make themselves feel better, and because it isn't true :]
" I'm not a fan, but I wouldn't say I hate her. I just find her to be an extremely boring character. "
Oh man no fights, i hate that.... we all are comic geeks ,lets just love each other! ....
And Jean borring? She killed plenty of species, how much more exciting can it get?
I will freely admit that I hate Jean. I don't like her at all. Its controversial i know but here are my reasons.
In full power (with the full phoenix force) then she is too powerful to need a team. She can do anything and therefore i dont worry about her winning or loosing- she is always going to win unless the writer wants to sacrifi
ce her to make a story seem epic. There are only like five characters more powerful then her.
When she is in a relationship with scott (my favourite character) then it is too straight forward. Where is the excitment in two characters who are just that in love. Their relationship defined scott for years as the guy other then wolverine that jean liked. At least with emma the audience doesnt know if it will last for long.
Jean is a hero.
Jean is such a hero that she sacrificed herself to save the world.
Thats cool.
That's respectable.
But why bring her back? She sacrificed herself and thats awesome but as soon as writers bring her back then her sacrifice is belittled. Do it a couple of times and the sacrifice seems like little more than a plot point.
Dark phoenix is evil right? I mean thats what everyone says... but all i have ever seen was her destroy some planet/sun that no one heard of or cared about. Who gives a crap? If Mars exploded tommorow who would care? We have nothing invested in it. Oh no she killed a billion people - but then she comes to earth and she ... turns trees into gold. and throws people around. Oh she's very bad.
Wait hold on. She's not even that bad. Please tell me something that she has done that makes her a threat? Other then blow up planets no one knew about?
In conclusion, people can like jean because she is the little mutant that couldnt save the day but then realised she is a god. But i just find her boring. THe x-men thrive on characters who cause conflict - whether its Gambit acting suspiciously, Wolverine acting like a loner, Rogue with her dark past and dangerous powers, new members like Magneto and Namor with mysterious goals or even scott who acts like boyscout and who makes decisions that cost mutants their lives. Jean was just a straight forward character with almost no personality aside from the adjective "lovely".
I like my x-men complicated and I think Jean was just too straight forward. Even with her dark side.
Emma frost may be a biotch! and people may never trust her but that just makes me want to keep reading to find out if she ever deserves her place on the x-men.
" Oh man no fights, i hate that.... we all are comic geeks ,lets just love each other! .... And Jean borring? She killed plenty of species, how much more exciting can it get? "Jean is very very boring. She has virtually no personality and is little more than a walking powerset.
She and I are quite happy together in the White Hot Room, she's satisfied and not planning on returning anytime.
Jean has the power of a G-D but when she joins back up with the X-Men (when she's not dead!) she's treated like a little girl that needs to be monitored 24/7! Maybe thats why she always dies... to see if the X-Men lose their care-giving trait... which means she should arrive soon!
" It also hate how people love Emma. Its not that i hate her, shes okay, but she just annoys the hell out of me.Is there something wrong with me since i love both Jean and Emma? lol
" @xxCellPhoneGirlxx said:lol!" @Crom-Cruach: Is there a reason your using big words like invalidate or legitimate, or do you normally talk like that? Just wondering lol "LOL. Crom-Cruach is the Architect from the Matrix film series. "
The problem with her is that she's largely defined as being the girl in a love triangle, and that's never a good trait if that's one of the first things people think of when they think your character.
Because she never stays dead. I'm no fan of any character that has died and came back to life. If you're going to kill someone off then don't even bring them back, it's anti-climatic and oh so very idiotic. It destroys the whole point of killing off the character in the first place.
" @Crom-Cruach: I hope you do know that Jean has been in pretty much most of the best x-stories in history. After she died pretty much a lot of the big stories have been about Cable, Hope, and X-Force. "
nothing wrong with x-force in my opinion. It's my favorite book.
I am hoping for her return soon though.
"She can do anything and therefore i dont worry about her winning or loosing- she is always going to win unless the writer wants to sacrifice her to make a story seem epic. ... I like my x-men complicated and I think Jean was just too straight forward. Even with her dark side.I'm a lover of Jean, but right there you hit the two points that make every narrative of her difficult - which, in turn, makes people hate her.
First, having been down the all-powerful-phoenix road at least twice now, it's hard to write Jean as effective contributer to a team without putting some artificial constraint on her power. They had one chance to reset things for good when they brought her back in X-Factor, but over time the writers couldn't resist bringing the Phoenix force back to the equation. Effectively, she's written as if her powers have no limits. Because of that she has to have barriers installed, or she's afraid of what will happen, or she switches powers with someone else - she only works as a teammate with these artificial limitations attached to her.
Second, as a character Jean was always intended to be a simple "good girl." That worked really well when she was young, shy, and not in control of her powers. It doesn't work with her as the strongest TK user on the planet and married to the team captain. As much as I love her, I have to admit - there was no point after she rejoined the main X-team that she had any kind of consistent personality.
(Intriguingly, they have put Wanda in this same place - any intrigue in her character has been washed out, so now she's just over-powered and nice. It's a deadly combo.)
Is there a way to bring Jean back and make her work? I think it could be done. I think Scott needs to stay with Emma, and I think Jean can't be posed as weak or helpless. The writers need to give Jean a new journey that informs the scale of her powers, much as they have with Rogue. She gained fine control at the expense of being an invulnerable tank, and now we have to worry about her - she's vulnerable, vulnerable enough that her personality and intelligence have meaning again.
They need to find the equivalent for Jean.
I hate Jean Kujo cause he's a ripoff of Jin Kazama!!!! Hehehehe!
Personally I don't like Jean cause she's got no umph! At least compared to Emma, she's so damn boring.
