Origin

Marvel Girl and the original X-Men

Jean was born in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. Her father was a history professor at Bard College. Jean was the only person in her immediate family that had mutant powers. They first manifested when she was 10 years old when her friend was hit by a car. As her friend was dying, Jean accidentally links their mind. Jean would basically experience her friend dying which almost kills her, but Jean was luckily only left in a coma. Jean’s parents would seek help for her daughter and Professor X would be the one to help. Xavier quickly realizes that Jean would not be able to handle her massive amount of power so he places telepathic blocks in her mind to keep her from accessing it. This also allowed Jean to develop her mutant abilities at a normal pace. At the age of 13 Jean develops her telekinesis. She would eventually become an original member of the X-Men and is the first female X-Men.

Jean and Cyclops

Love in the Air

For a long time, Jean and Cyclops had crushes on each other, although neither of them knew about it. They were too shy to tell each other how they felt. On a date with Angel, Jean wanted to take Scott along. Since Angel also had a crush on Jean, it angered them both. Jean and Scott eventually learned about each other’s feelings and started dating. Another person who had romantic feelings for Jean was Professor Xavier, but believed that she would not accept it because he was a paraplegic. So Xavier continued the mentor/student relationship.

On a mission to Krakoa, the X-Men were captured. Xavier sent a new team of X-Men to save them and after this event, most of the senior members left. Scott told Jean that he needed to stay with the X-Men and she became upset.

Original Phoenix

While Jean and Scott were on a date, they were kidnapped by Sentinels and taken to an abandoned SHIELD space tower by an anti-mutant organization. The X-Men rescue them and they had to abandon the space tower when they learned that the shuttle was damaged. Jean decided that she would pilot it because she felt that she was the only one with the chance of surviving. She read the pilot’s memories and, from them, learned how to fly the shuttle. During the flight, she used her telekinesis to block out the radiation. The radiation put strain on Jean and caused Xavier’s psychic blocks to disintegrate and her full potential to be unleashed. She became "pure thought" as the shuttle crashed; with her newly-empowered telekinesis, she reformed her body and emerged with a new code-name, Phoenix Force.

Dark Phoenix

Dark Phoenix Saga

Jean’s increasing powers eventually corrupted her, and realizing this, the Mastermind took it to his advantage. When the X-Men tried to rescue Jean, Scott’s psychic image was killed by Mastermind which caused Jean’s power to go insane. She became the Dark Phoenix and eventually became hungrier and hungrier. She went to another galaxy and dove into the sun to feed on it. This caused the sun to become a supernova leading to the deaths of aliens inhabiting billions of different planets. Beast developed a device that neutralized the Phoenix’s power as the X-Men and Dark Phoenix battled. Successful, Xavier was able to replace the mental blocks on her mind. The Shi’ar abducted them, believing Phoenix to be guilty of Genocide. They were teleported to a moon and battled the Imperial Guards. The X-Men were beginning to lose as Jean started panicking and unleashed the Dark Phoenix again. The X-Men were able to subdue Jean, but she committed suicide.

Retconning Phoenix

Writers wanted to bring Jean back and the only way to do this was to make the Phoenix a separate entity. This caused a Retcon on how Jean became the Phoenix. The Phoenix was now an immortal force of life. It is the Guardian of Creation and the M’Kraan Crystal. When Jean was telepathically linked to her dying friend’s mind the Phoenix helped separate Jean from the link and kept close to Jean. When Jean was in the shuttle and dying while trying to navigate the shuttle, the Phoenix came to save her and resulted in Jean becoming the Phoenix. The rest of the Dark Phoenix saga was left as was originally written.

Back to Life

Jean's revamped costume

While Jean was still believed to be dead, Scott meets a woman who looked identical to Jean named Madelyne Pryor. They would eventually marry and have a son named Nathan Christopher Charles Summers. The Avengers discover a pod in the Jamaica bay and they send it to Mr. Fantastic. They successfully open it and Jean emerges from the pod. It was later revealed that the Phoenix Force was the one that became the Dark Phoenix and placed Jean in a cocoon to heal after the shuttle incident. Scott would soon leave Madelyne and rejoin Jean to create X-Factor. Scott thought his wife left him when she does not answer him, but in fact was kidnapped along with her son Nathan by Mr. Sinister. It was revealed that Mr. Sinister created Madelyne as a genetic clone of Jean. Sinister wanted Nathan because he believed the baby that the two create will be the most power mutant ever.

The X-Men save Madelyne when she was turned over to the Marauders. Madelyne wanted to rescue her son so badly she made a pact with demons which drove her insane. She dies in a battle against Jean when she links their mind together, Madelyne killed herself in hopes of killing Jean too but was unsuccessful. As a result Jean regained her memories and her telepathy was restored by the baby Nathan.

Marriage

Jean's wedding finally

Jean had the memories of the Phoenix and Madelyne because of the previous event. When Scott proposes to Jean, she declined because the memory of him marrying Madelyn haunted her. Jean would eventually propose to Scott herself and they end up marrying. During their honey moon, they were taken to the future to raise Nathan. They finally return and Jean starts using the code-name Phoenix again in honor of her dead daughter Rachel (Rachel was actually lost in time after the death of Apocalypse.)

They would eventually battle Apocalypse and he merges with Scott. During this time Jean and Psylocke mix and matches their powers. Jean gains added telepathy powers from Psylocke and also the shadow form while in the astral plane. Jean would learn that Scott was still alive from Cable and they set off to rescue him. Jean successfully separates Apocalypse from Scott with her telepathic abilities. After this Jean accepts her role as being the host for the Phoenix Force.

Jean with phoenix force

When Jean becomes the headmistress of the Xavier Institute, the relationship between Jean and Scott start to fall apart. Jean tries to rebuild their relationship whereas Scott continued to distant himself from Jean, also declining to sleep with her. Jean would later discover the psychic affair between him and Emma. Jean tries to confront Emma about this but Emma just continues to insult Jean. Enraged, Jean unleashes the Phoenix’s power on Emma humiliating her.

During this time, Jean started to openly talk to Wolverine about her feelings and her marital problems. Wolverine tries to help the couple reconcile with each other even. Wolverine even convinced Jean to return to Scott after having the telepathic affair. Jean and Wolverine have always had a silent attraction to each other. Wolverine deeply cares for Jean but he respects her decision to stay with her husband.

When Wolverine and Jean were thrown at the sun while on Asteroid M, Wolverine stabs Jean so she does not have to die a horrible death in the sun. As they came closer to the sun the Phoenix was unleashed and saves them both. Jean tells him that by killing her it helped unleash the Phoenix’s consciousness. They finally return to earth and battle Xorn, Xorn shoots electro-magnetic energy into Jean’s brain and it kills her, Jean dies in Scott’s arms.

Endsong

The Shi’ar resurrects the Phoenix force in an attempt to destroy it while it was weak. It escapes to Earth and finds Jeans grave, where it would resurrect Jean. Jean learns that she and the Phoenix were one and would eventually battle the X-Men. Jean finally realizes how many people love her and she regains control over the Phoenix. Jean then leaves earth and is currently in the White Hot Room to help her become whole with the Phoenix again.

Powers and Abilities

Jean is an Omega-level mutant which means she is one of the most powerful mutants in the Marvel Universe. At first Jean was only able to use telekenitic abilities during the early X-Men years. Later it was revealed that Professor Xavier had suppressed her telepathy because Jean could not handle the power. Xavier continued to train Jean how to control her telekenisis while allowing her telepathy to manifest at a natural rate. Her telekenisis became more powerful as Jean began learning how to train it. She can grasp objects that are in Earth’s orbit. Jean can also lift tons of mass at once with her telekinetic powers. She uses her telekinetic powers for both offense in which she could blast energy at the opponent, or for defense in which she can create a force field strong enough to protect her from a missile. When Jean’s telepathy finally manifested to the point where Jean could no longer hide it, she eventually learns to control it. Jean is considered one of the most powerful telepaths in the Marvel Universe, and is said to eventually become even more powerful then Professor Xavier, who is said to currently be the most powerful telepath. With telepathy, it allows Jean to read other people’s thoughts, communicate with them telepathically, create an astral plane form, or blast one’s mind. Her telepathy is so strong that she can even communicate with highly intelligent animals, such as dolphins, dogs, and ravens. Jean’s telepathy power would increase when she absorb Psylocke’s telepathy. Her telepathy is now strong enough to the point where she can manifest a psionic version of the phoenix bird, with the fire claws actually hurting anyone it touches.

Writers decided to make the Phoenix Force an alien entity instead of the originally written dual personality, as written by Chris Claremont. Now that the Phoenix is another entity it can absorb or revive any life form, dead or alive. When Jean is together with the Phoenix, her power level is increased dramatically. Powers that come with the Phoenix allows Jean to fly through space, breathe in any atmosphere, rearrange matter at a subatomic level, and generate massive energy blasts.

Jean is also an accomplished pilot. She was trained in unarmed combat by Wolverine.
