Jean Grey

Jean Grey is a comic book character that first appeared in X-Men #1

Jean Grey is a founding member of the X-men and former love of Scott Summers. An omega-level telekinetic and telepath, Jean has gained near limitless powers as a recurrent host of the Phoenix Force.

Origin

Jean Grey was the younger daughter of  Professor John Grey of the History Department of Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson , and his wife Elaine Grey. When Jean was a child of ten, she was  playing with her friend Annie Richardson when Annie was hit by an automobile. Jean's powers then manifested and she experienced her friend's death firsthand. She was so disturbed that she isolated herself because she had no control over her new abilities.

When Jean was eleven, a psychiatrist told her parents to consult Professor Charles Xavier who was a telepathic mutant. Professor X told her the reality that she was a mutant. Her parents did not know that Jean was even one of the mutants. Professor brought her to the Institute and taught her how to operate Cerebro. Jean, in the form of the Phoenix, touched Scott Summer's mind as he slept in an orphanage. Professor locked her powers using a psychic shield so her powers will only be used when she matures. When she was at the age of 13, she developed telekinesis which led Professor X to teach her in levitating objects using her mind.

When Professor X declared that Jean had reached mastery of her powers, he recommended that they should enroll their daughter in his school.  The Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters was secretly a school for mutants that also serves as the X-Men's headquarters.

Jean became the fifth member of the X-Men and the first woman to join the mutant team. She was joined by four male members: Scott Summers (code named Cyclops), Henry McCoy (code named Beast), Warren Worthington (code named Angel) and Bobby Drake (code named Iceman). Jean herself took the code name Marvel Girl.

The team became active in fighting the other mutants (and humans) who threatened peace on the entire planet. As time went by, the team's relationship grew tighter as they remained together saving the world for a long time.

During the event when the alien force named Z'Nox attempted to invade the planet, Professor X released the psychic shields on Jean and made her powers released. It caused her to use her powers with Jean's control that was improved by her maturity and practice. Professor X was then believed to be dead and Jean was the one who uses her telepathic powers to aid the X-Men.

Love is in the Air

Cyclops

Jean fell in love with her co-X-Men member Scott Summers (Cyclops). Both of them were very shy to say how they really felt for each other, but they later revealed that they both loved each other. Later, when Professor X recruited new students in the school, the other original members aside from Cyclops left the school to find their own paths. Cyclops, since he remained in the school, continued his relationship with Jean. Jean at that time worked as a swimsuit model while Cyclops worked as a radio announcer. Their relationship survived countless challenges, finally leading to their marriage.

Married at last

Marriage

Scott then proposed to Jean, but she kept on declining, since the memory of him being married to Madelyne Pryor after he thought Jean was dead caused a lot of turmoil in Jean's mind. She gradually came around and after some deliberation, Jean then proposed to Scott. Finally their marriage was consummated and they also accepted Rachel Summers, their daughter from a parallel reality, into their lives.

During their honeymoon, they went to an alternate time line to raise Scott and Madelyne's son Nathan Summers (later known as Cable). During their return, Jean adopted a new codename to credit the entity and Rachel since she was believed to be dead. Also because of this, Jean adopted a green costume with a yellow mask. However, it was revealed that Rachel was only missing due to events that happened along with Apocalypse's premature death.

Apocalypse and Cyclops then were fused during a battle, which led Jean to switch powers with Psylocke. It increased the powers of both women leading into stronger and additional powers. With the help of this, Jean was able to separate the spirits of Scott and Apocalypse.

Angel

Jean also dated Warren Worthington (Angel), causing confusion about Jean's real feelings towards Scott and the aforementioned X-Man. This led to some arguments between the two X-Men, both of whom admired Jean.

Professor X

At some point, because of their bond since Jean's childhood, even Charles Xavier developed a greater affection for Jean. The Professor decided to keep it a secret, since he felt that Jean would reject him due to his physical handicap and because he was her longtime mentor. This affection led Charles to transfer his powers to Jean at one point, and he also quit in the Institute after her death. Onslaught revealed that Xavier had an affection for Jean when he invited her to tune into the Professor's hidden thoughts.

Wolverine

After joining the X-Men, Wolverine also fell in love with the telepathic mutant. Even though his love for Jean was intense, he would respect Jean's choice for loving Scott. Jean would talk to Logan about her marital problems and Logan helped the couple reconcile.

Phoenix Force

Dark Phoenix
Dark Phoenix
The Original team had a mission in Krakoa leading Professor X to recruit another team of mutants to help them. Once again, Jean and the other members left the team, but not Cyclops, who believed that he belonged to the X-men. This upset Jean. However, Jean still have connections with the X-Men especially being a best friend with Ororo Munroe (Storm).

During Scott and Jean's romantic night, the three X-Men (Jean, Wolverine and Banshee) were abducted by the Sentinels. They are taken to an abandoned SHIELD orbital platform under the command of the anti-mutant activist Steven Lang, who plans to unleash a new generation of Sentinels.

The Space Station destruction was then damaged after being rescued by the other X-men and Dr. Corbeau. The X-Men planned that there must be someone to pilot and the others should be protected by the ship's mechanism.

Jean volunteered and telepathically contacted Dr. Corbeau on the instructions of piloting the ship. After wards, Jean's psychic shield that were placed by Professor X was destroyed and she unleashed her powers to its full extent. The ship crashes on a bay and Jean telekinetically reforms her body with the water.

Jean became the Phoenix and became a lot stronger than before. She healed the M'Kraan Crystal to prevent the universe from destruction.

Mastermind confuses Jean as he used his powers on altering Jean's history. He made her believe that she was an aristocrat and that she was Mastermind's wife and the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club. Jean then lost control of her extremely strong powers which caused her to become evil spreading tragedies and fighting her fiends. When she temporarily gained her own consciousness, she used her powers to commit suicide rather than living just to kill anyone's life.

After killing herself in the moon in an afterlife called White Hot Room, her soul was awaken and welcomed by death to help her understand the Phoenix Force before she was sent back to Earth. Jean found herself on top of a floating tower in an outer space like realm wondering why she was not dead.

Jean's corpse was then awakened by the Phoenix Force causing her dead body to dig and rise. Her body was then rejuvenated by the Phoenix Force creating the White Phoenix.

The Color of the Phoenix

Jean believed that every color of the Phoenix have meanings. Dressed in a White Phoenix outfit Jean wondered if there are three phases of the Phoenix: Green the Good, Red the Bad, and White to which she had not discovered the meaning to. Later on in the phoenix endsong she discovered that white had meant she and phoenix were one in the same, she became White Phoenix of the Crown, the strongest version of the phoenix force.

Jean is Back!

After many years after Jean's death, the Avengers found her pod in Jamaica. The pod was then brought to the Fantastic Four for further studies. Jean then woke up and cannot remember anything even her encounter with the Phoenix Force. The Avengers and the Fantastic Four let her remember. After that, Jean lost her telepathic powers but had her telekinetic abilities boosted.

Jean and the other founding members of X-Men have reunited and have been aware about the anti-mutant movements in the country. The X-Men are working with Magneto. The five of them then formed a team named X-Factor.

During her death, Scott married her clone that was created by Mr. Sinister who was meant to be a failure that was brought to life by an amount of the Phoenix Force rejected by Jean. Later on, Madelyne became the Goblin Queen and was defeated in a battle with Marvel Girl.

Jean's telepathic powers have been regained after she fought Psynapse.

Onslaught

Onslaught confronted Jean and promised her that he can show Professor X's hidden memories such as his affection for her. He also promised that he can give the power of the Phoenix Force. jean then confronted Juggernaut in the Z'Nox chamber that shields the two of them from detection. They have planned on unlocking Onslaught's identity. Yet, when Onslaught muzzled her, she returned to Z'Nox chamber to warn the other X-men members about Bishop's vision from the future.

Zero Tolerance

In an operation called Operation:Zero Tolerance, Cyclops was implanted with a nano-bomb. During these events, Jean used her telekinetic abilities to protect Cyclops until the day that the nano-bomb will be removed by surgery.Jean then started wearing a costume based upon the incarnation of the Phoenix as she manifests fire bird effects from her telekinesis. This worried Scott.

Apocalypse

Origin
  • Apocalypse captures the twelve powerful mutants that will determine the fate of humanity which includes Jean and Scott. Using a machine, Apocalypse  was able to absorb their powers. This gave Apocalypse a lot of powers. Then, the powerless Scott Summers shoved X-man apart from Apocalypse to prevent another evil entity. Jean then detected Scott's psyche and told the X-Men not to harm him. Most of the X-Men believed that Scott was dead, though, Jean and cable are the only remaining mutants who don't believe in his death. With the combined efforts of Jean and Cable, they were able to separate Scott from Apocalypse and rejoined the team.

  • New X-Men

The Xavier Institute reopened and Jean Grey became its headmistress alongside with Scott as the Headmaster. When the U-Men attacked the Institute, the students aided the Phoenix by repelling their attack. Meanwhile, Jean again manifested the Phoenix Force. During a battle against Cassandra Nova, Jean used Cerebra to splinter Xavier into the minds of other mutants of the planet. Cassandra on Xavier's body activated the Cerebro causing Professor X to regain his body.

    Jean Grey-Emma Frost Rivalry

Emma had a telepathic affair with Cyclops. Tipped off by the Stepford Cuckoos Phoenix rampaged through Emma's mind. Emma was shot by  Esme while in her diamond form causing he to be shattered into pieces. Phoenix saw that the Cuckoos are lying and repaired Emma's body telekinetically.

    Phoenix Endsong

  • The Phoenix Force has been formed in no time. The Shi'Ar warship assaulted it that caused its powers to splinter in the galaxy. The Shi'Ar also planned on killing Jean Grey as they believe that Jean is the heart of the Phoenix.

  • During the Phoenix's arrival to planet Earth, it discovered that  Jean was dead. With the full determination to resurrect Jean, it consumed her body and forced her to dig herself out of the grave and her body was then resurrected. Though, none of them were prepared for the early resurrection that caused the Phoenix to be insane and form the Dark Phoenix. Jean stated that the resurrection was wrong and the entity was "sick, blind, and has forgotten".

  • The X-Men started formulating tactics on containing the Phoenix Force but thing got worse when Kid Omega who have been recorded with notable crimes have returned and is planning to resurrect Sophie Cuckoo using the aforementioned entity.  The Shi'ar then arrived and planned to kill the Phoenix while it is still unprepared and weak.

  • The X-Men encountered her in North Pole where Logan would repeatedly attempt to kill her. Wolverine confronted her and asked if he is talking to Jean or the Phoenix. She replied "I am always Jean Grey and always the Phoenix". Phoenix managed to regain control of herself and seal herself on ice. Phoenix used Cyclops' optic blast to empower herself. During an attempt by Emma Frost to fool the Phoenix, she told the entity that Scott no longer love Jean who accepted and Cyclops quickly trapped them both in a Phoenix Egg containment unit created by the Beast. Emma then offered herself to be consumed by the Phoenix Force.

  • Quentin Quire then appeared with an attempt to bring Sophie Cuckoo back to life. Quentin succeeded but Sophie decided to stay dead instead of staying with Kid Omega.  Meanwhile, Emma Frost is still consumed by the Phoenix Force while inside the Phoenix Egg but because she is only an Alpha Type Mutant unlike Jean Grey who is in Omega Level, she did not have the chance to be consumed by the entity for long. Jean Grey then forcibly separated Emma and the Phoenix. The Phoenix was surprised that Jean Grey can do that even without the help of her powers. She then stated that they are only one and their powers were just the same as jean Grey is always the Phoenix.

  • Cyclops then instructed the Stepford Cuckoos and Emma Frost to link all the X-Men telepathically to sustain the Phoenix 's sanity. As this happened, the Phoenix transformed itself into the White Phoenix.

  • But then the Shi'ar created an event horizon and Cyclops found himself somewhere with the White Phoenix. She then requested Scott to show her his eyes and they both bath with his optic blast. As Cyclops woke up, he found himself and the other X-Men alive.
  • Powers

  • Jean Grey is an Omega Level Mutant which means that she is one of the most powerful mutants of the Marvel Universe.
  • She have intense capabilities telepathically as she can link her mind to other persons and high level animals and communicate with them. She can also have access to their minds to read their thoughts and even control the way on how they think. She can also possess them mentally so that Jean Grey can use their powers like she uses her body. She can also delete memories and cause trauma to be induced. She can also cast illusions mentally and even fool others that an event is occurring even if its not. She can also appear invisible to the mind of her target. She can also mentally induce the pain of those people who have been hurt physically.

  • She can also convert herself into an astral plane which can create psionic weapons that can hurt targets mentally. While in this state, Jean Grey is a great fighter as she knows how to use this power well. She can also manifest a psionic fire bird that can cause damages both physically and mentally for the target.

  • She also have a great power of telekinesis as she can levitate objects mentally and move them the way that she want to. This ability can also manifest heat, force fields and flight.

  • While being consumed by the Phoenix Entity, she also gain the ability to manipulate and generate fire with extreme heat. However, Jean is immune to this power as she  is not burned. The fire that she produces also do not depend on oxygen like other pyrokinetics because it can be used even underwater. She also gains the power to breathe even on space. While using her telekinesis, she also have the ability to determine the properties of the object that she is levitating. As it was obviously shown in the comics, Jean is always resurrected by the Phoenix with its powers to sustain life.

As lots of names were mentioned by Marjorie, even if Jean told her to stop, Jean became confused and lost control of her telekinetic powers which manifested intensely. It called Emma's attention as she detected her through Cerebra. Emma then confronted Scott that she might have found Jean. They followed the location where Emma thinks Jean is. Meanwhile, Jean is being chased by the MRD in the hospital. She was then cornered by the MRD as Marjorie pointed her to them. Archangel under Sinister's command followed Jean and tortured her. Scott and Emma then appeared to help her and discovered that Jean is not mentally contacting Scott because she don't even remember him. They were then followed by Archangel. He was then able to abduct Jean and take him to Sinister to get her genetic samples to create the ultimate mutant in combination with Scott's genes. The X-Men then appeared and helped them but the Marauders are powerful enough to defeat them. Jean Grey is played by Famke Janssen in the X-Men Trilogy. In X-Men, Jean is the schools medical doctor and is dating Scott Summers. When Wolverine arrives at the school a love triangle starts between the three. In the first film her powers are very limited compared to her comic counterpart. She is a low level telekinetic, able to moce small objects around. Her greatest feats in this movie where when she stopped Toad mid-leap. And when she held Wolverine steady as Storm used wind to levitate him to the top of the statue. An early version of the "Phoenix effect" can be seen as a glow when she manages to help Wolverine achieve his goal of breaking the machine with his claws.
  • X-Men: X-Men united. Jean's powers have started to develope into what would soon be the Phoenix. At the beginning of the film, Jean is watching over the student on a field trip to a museum. She tells Scott that she has been haveing bad dreams and that her telepathy has been growing stronger and is off. And that since the event on Liberty Island her powers have been increasing. While on the run from the U.S. Air Force, in the X-Jet, Jean shows Phoenix like powers when she destroys a missile, causing her eyes to glow fire red. When she fights Cyclops who is under William Stryker's control, and is able to telekinetically shield herself from Cyclops' optic beam before dispersing it and scattering the energy about, causing it to destroy the dam's structural integrity. A red glow seems to come off of Jean at this point.  Her power reaches to the Phoenix level as she sends the broken down X-Jet away, telepathically stops Nightcrawler's teleportation to prevent him from rescuing her, and communicates with Cyclops through Professor X by telepathy. All while she holds back the resulting tidal wave. Jean is engulfed by fire at this point and she closes her eyes and lets the waters crash onto her. At the End of the movie as Jean narrates an explanation of evolution you can see the Phoenix Force flying below the surface of the water.
  • X-Men: The Last Stand. When Jean died in the last film, it started a downward spiral to Scott. He is haunted by nightmares and telepathic messages. He returns to Alkali Lake, where he angrily releases the full force of his optic blasts into the waters. This in turns awakens the Phoenix. [Like in the comic, the Phoenix feeds off of the obtic blast. It can be argued that Scotts outburst is what causes her rise.] They begin to kiss and she insists he remove his glasses as she is able to control his powers, but then apparently kills him by atomizing him with her telekinesis. [Although this is not shown on screen, it is obvious of what happens.] When Scott is killed, Xavier is shown feeling pain and then sends out a telepathic message that has Wolverine and Storm running to his side. He sends them to Alkali Lake where they find the Phoenix unconscious and is taken back to the Mansion. It is revealed by Xavier that since Jean was little she  had powers that were beyond all known limitations. Fearing that Jean could not control her vast powers, Xavier put psychic blocks around her subconscious mind to keep Jean's full powers at bay. From this while growing up, Jean has developed a dual personality - one being her usual self and the other being her powerful and uninhibited side which calls itself the 'Phoenix' which emerges when she gets angry. Xavier leaves and Wolverine stays by Jean's side. when she awakes, she seems normal but is really the aggresive Phoenix. The kiss and when Jean snaps out of the Phoenixs hold she starts to have a nervous breakdown, causeing thing to shake and burst. When Wolverine mentions Xavier, the Phoenix comes back full force and knocks Wolverine out, and crumbles the huge mental doors. She is seen at her old childhood house, where Xavier mets Magneto. Once in the house, the Phoenix and Xavier begin a huge telepathic battle. Gravity reverses, and things begin to disintegrate. Lastly Xavier. The Phoenix joins Magneto. When the attack ends at Alcatraz Island, Dark Phoenix unleashes her full power and destroys much of Worthington Labs, the X-Jet, and kills both mutants and humans along the way. Wolverine tells Storm to get everyone to safety while he stays behind, as he is the only one who can stop her [because of his healing factor]. He manages to get Jean, who burns through his skin multiple times, to re-surface long enough to plead for him to stop her from causing any more harm. Wolverine says to Jean he loves her. After his profession of love Wolverine quickly stabs her with his claws. With that, Jean's destruction ceases and she smiles thankfully to Logan before she dies. Her gravestone is later seen next to Cyclops' and Xavier's....[Although in the comics, Wolverine stabbing Phoenix is not enough to kill her.]
