Dark Phoenix, Marvel Girl, Phoenix, Black Queen, all names for the one and only, Jean Grey. She is a founding member of the X-men and former love of Scott Summers. An omega-level telekinetic and telepath, Jean has gained near limitless powers as a recurrent host of the Phoenix Force.
Jean Grey Origins
Jean Grey is the youngest daughter of Professor John Grey, of Bard College History Department in Annandale-on-Hudson and his wife Elaine Grey. When Jean was a child of ten, she was playing with her friend Annie Richardson when Annie was struck by an automobile. Jean's powers then manifested and she experienced her friend's death firsthand. She was so disturbed by this that she isolated herself because she could not control her new abilities.
When Jean was eleven, a psychiatrist suggested to her parents that they consult Professor Charles Xavier, who was a telepathic mutant. Professor X informed Jean and her parents that Jean was in fact a mutant. Her parents had never considered the possibility that Jean could be a mutant. Professor X brought her to his school in Westchester County New York, Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. He then taught her how to operate Cerebro. Jean then, in the form of the Phoenix, touched Scott Summer's mind as he slept in an orphanage. For Jean's own good, Professor X dampened her powers using a series of psychic shields, or blocks, so her powers would only manifest at levels she could handle as she matured. When Jean reached the age of 13, she started to manifest telekinetic powers, which led Professor X to begin instructing her in its use.
X-Men
When Professor X declared that Jean had reached mastery of her powers (her telekinesis), he recommended to her parents that they should enroll their daughter in his school. The Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters, presently known as the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, was secretly a school for mutants, and also serves as the X-Men's headquarters.
Jean became the fifth member of the X-Men and the first woman to join the mutant team. The other members of the team were Scott Summers (code named Cyclops), Henry McCoy (code named Beast), Warren Worthington (code named Angel) and Bobby Drake (code named Iceman). Jean herself took the code name Marvel Girl.
The team became active in fighting other mutants (and humans) who threatened peace on the planet. As time went by, the team's relationship grew tighter and they came to think of themselves as family. This original team remained together saving the world for quite a long time.
When the alien force named Z'Nox attempted to invade the planet, Professor X released most of the psychic shields on Jean. He hoped, due to her current maturity level in addition to his years of tutalage and training, that she could handle the amount of power she now had access to. Professor X was then believed to be dead and Jean in effect took on some of the roles he used to fulfill. She continued to use her telepathic and formidable telekinetic powers to aid the X-Men.
Cyclops
Jean fell in love with her co-X-Men member Scott Summers (Cyclops). Both of them were very shy and slow to show how they really felt for each other, but they eventally revealed how much they both loved each other. Later, when Professor X recruited new students into the school, the other original members, except for Cyclops, left the school to follow their own paths. Cyclops continued his relationship with Jean. Jean at that time worked as a swimsuit model while Cyclops worked as a radio announcer. Their relationship survived countless challenges, finally leading to their marriage.
A few years later Cyclops became possessed by En Sabah Nur and was released of his influence when Jean used her advanced telepathy to seperate the both of them. However, Jean and Scott grew apart after this as Scott felt he didn't know Jean anymore. This drove Scott into the arms of Emma Frost and they began a telepathic affair. After Jeans death, Scott continued his relationship with Emma... much to the dismay of other X-men like Shadowcat and Rachel Summers the newly minted Marvel Girl.
Marriage
Scott proposed to Jean, but she kept on declining due to the memory of him being married to Madelyne Pryor, after he thought Jean was dead, which caused a lot of turmoil in Jean's mind. She gradually came around and after some deliberation, Jean then proposed to Scott. Finally their marriage was consummated and they also accepted Rachel Summers, their daughter from a parallel reality, into their lives.During their honeymoon, they went to an alternate time line to raise Scott and Madelyne's son Nathan Summers (later known as Cable). During their return, Jean adopted the new codename of Pheonix to credit the entity and Rachel since she was believed to be dead. Also because of this, Jean adopted a green costume with a yellow mask. However, it was revealed that Rachel was only missing due to events that happened along with Apocalypse's premature death.
Apocalypse and Cyclops were then fused during a battle, which led Jean to switch powers with Psylocke. the sswitch increased the powers of both women leading to stronger and additional powers for both. With the help of these powers, Jean was able to separate the spirits of Scott and Apocalypse.Angel & Wolverine
Jean also dated Warren Worthington III (Angel), causing confusion about Jean's real feelings towards Scott and the aforementioned X-Man. This led to some arguments between the two X-Men, both of whom admired Jean. After joining the X-Men, Wolverine also fell in love with the telepathic mutant. Even though his love for Jean was intense, he would respect Jean's choice and love for Scott. Jean would talk to Logan about her marital problems and Logan helped the couple reconcile.
Professor X
At some point, due to the bond they've shared since Jean's childhood, even Charles Xavier developed a greater affection for Jean. The Professor decided to keep it a secret, since he felt that Jean would reject him due to his physical handicap and because he was her longtime mentor. This affection led Charles to transfer his powers to Jean at one point, and to also leave the Institute after her death. Onslaught revealed that Xavier had affections for Jean when he invited her to tune into the Professor's hidden thoughts.Phoenix Force
The Original X-Men team left for a mission to Krakoa, which lead to ther capture. This forced Professor X into recruiting another team of mutants to rescue them. This team became known as the New X-Men. Once again, Jean and the other members left the team, but not Cyclops, who believed that he belonged with the X-Men. Scott's decision upset Jean. However, Jean held on to her connections with the X-Men, especially being best friends with Storm. Cyclops, Wolverine, and eventually Jean Grey/Pheonix became part of this new team of X-Men.During a romantic night for Scott and Jean, three X-Men (Jean, Wolverine and Banshee) ended up being abducted by the Sentinels. They are taken to an abandoned SHIELD orbital platform under the command of the anti-mutant activist Steven Lang, who planned to unleash a new generation of Sentinels.
The Space Station was then during the rescue mission made by the other X-Men and Dr. Corbeau, which led to them having to abandon the station immediately before it was destroyed. They escaped the space sation aboard a space shuttle. The X-Men realized that someone had to pilot the shuttle while the others should be protected in a rear compartment.
Jean volunteered and telepathically contacted Dr. Corbeau for instructions on piloting the ship. Upon re-etry, Jean's psionic shield's were overcome and she was aout to die and so would everyone else on board. At this tme, the remaining blocks which Professor X placed in her mind gave way and she was able to unleash her powers to their full extent and save all on board. The ship crashes into a bay of water and Jean appears to telekinetically reform her body within the water.
Jean becomes the Phoenix and becomes extremely powerful as compared to before. As an example of how powerful she bacame, she was able to heal the M'Kraan Crystal to prevent the universe from destruction. She almost sngle handedly saved the universe.....
Mastermind psionically attacked Jean in the form of illusons, confusing her by altering her perception of history. He made her believe that she was an aristocrat and that she was Mastermind's wife and also the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club. Jean then lost control of her now totally unleashed powers which caused her to become evil, spreading tragedies and fighting her friends. When she temporarily gained her own consciousness back, she used her powers to commit suicide rather than kill everyone she loved.
After killing herself on the moon in an afterlife called "White Hot Room", her soul was awakened and welcomed by death to help her understand the Phoenix Force before she was sent back to Earth. Jean found herself on top of a floating tower in an outer space like realm wondering why she was not dead.
Jean's corpse was then awakened by the Phoenix Force, causing her dead body to dig itself out of the ground and rise. Her body was then rejuvenated by the Phoenix Force creating the White Phoenix. The Color of the Phoenix
Jean believes that every color of the Phoenix has meaning. Dressed in a White Phoenix outfit Jean wondered if there were three phases of the Phoenix: Green being Good, Red being Bad, and White being unknown to her at that time. Later during the Phoenix Endsong Saga, she discovered that the White Pheonix meant that she and the Phoenix Force were one in the same. She eventually became White Phoenix of the Crown, the strongest version of the Phoenix Force.
Resurrection of Marvel Girl
Many years after Jean's death, the Avengers found her pod/cocoon in Jamaica. Not realizing what it was they brought it to the Fantastic Four for further studies. Jean then woke up, emerged from the cocoon, and cannot remember anything, even her encounter with the Phoenix Force. The Avengers and the Fantastic Four helped her to remember. After that, Jean lost her telepathic powers but had her telekinetic abilities boosted.
Jean and the other founding members of the X-Men reunited and have become aware of the rising anti-mutant movements in the country. The X-Men begin working with Magneto. The five of them then formed a team named X-Factor.
During Jean's death, Scott married a clone of her which was created by Mr. Sinister. The clone was brought about by using a small amount of the Phoenix Force rejected by Jean and was intentionally meant to be a failure for Scott. The clone called itself Madelyne Pryor. Later on, Madelyne became the Goblin Queen and was defeated in a battle with Marvel Girl (Jean Grey).
Jean's telepathic powers were regained after her battle with Psynapse.
Onslaught
Onslaught confronted Jean and told her that he could show her Professor X's hidden memories, such as his affection for her. He also told her that he could give her the power of the Phoenix Force. Jean then confronted Juggernaut in the Z'Nox chamber that shields the two of them from detection. They planned on unlocking Onslaught's identity, yet when Onslaught muzzled her, she returned to the Z'Nox chamber to warn the other X-men members about Bishop's vision from the future.
Zero Tolerance
In an operation called Operation:Zero Tolerance, Cyclops was implanted with a nano-bomb. During these events, Jean used her telekinetic abilities to protect Cyclops until the day the nano-bomb could be removed by surgery. Jean then started wearing a costume based upon the incarnation of the Phoenix, and started manifesting Fire Bird effects during the use of her telekinesis. This worried Scott very much.
Apocalypse
Apocalypse captures the twelve most powerful mutants whom he believes will determine the fate of humanity, the twelve include Jean and Scott. Using a machine, Apocalypse was able to absorb their powers. This gave Apocalypse a multitude of powers. Then, the powerless Scott Summers shoved the other X-Men apart from Apocalypse to prevent the creation of another evil entity. Jean then detected Scott's psyche wthin Apocalypse and told the X-Men not to harm him. Most of the X-Men believed that Scott was dead, except for Jean and Cable. With the combined efforts of Jean and Cable, they were able to separate Scott from Apocalypse.New X-Men
The Xavier Institute reopened and Jean Grey became its Headmistress alongside its Headmaster, Scott. When the U-Men attacked the Institute, the students aided Phoenix by repelling their attack. Meanwhile, Jean again manifested the Phoenix Force. During a battle against Cassandra Nova, Jean used Cerebra to splinter Xavier into the minds of other mutants around the planet. Cassandra in Xavier's body activated Cerebro causing Professor X to regain his body.Jean Grey & Emma Frost
Emma had a telepathic affair with Cyclops. Tipped off by the Stepford Cuckoos, Phoenix rampaged through Emma's mind. Emma was shot by Esme while in her diamond form causing her to shatter into pieces. Phoenix found that the Cuckoos were lying and repaired Emma's body telekinetically.Phoenix Endsong
The Phoenix Force formed and was assalted by a Shi'Ar warship which caused it to splinter throughout the galaxy. The Shi'Ar also planned on killing Jean Grey as they believe that Jean is the heart of the Phoenix.During the Phoenix's arrival on planet Earth, it discovered that Jean was dead. With full determination to resurrect Jean, it consumed her body and forced her to dig herself out of her grave, and hence Jean was resurrected. Neither Jean nor the Pheonix Force were truely prepared for this resurrection, this caused the Phoenix to be insane and form the Dark Phoenix. Jean stated that the resurrection was wrong and the entity was "sick, blind, and has forgotten".
The X-Men started formulating tactics on how to contain the Phoenix Force, but things went from bad to worse when Kid Omega, who has a notable crime history, returned wth plans on resurrecting Sophie Cuckoo using the Pheonix entity. The Shi'ar then arrived as well and planned on killing the Phoenix while it/she was still unprepared and weak.
The X-Men encountered her at the North Pole where Logan would repeatedly attempt to kill her. Wolverine confronted her and asked if he is talking to Jean or the Phoenix, she replied "I am always Jean Grey and always the Phoenix". Phoenix managed to regain control of herself, and her sanity, and seal herself in ice. Phoenix then used Cyclops' optic blast to empower herself. During an attempt by Emma Frost to fool the Phoenix, by telling the entity that Scott no longer loved Jean. Pheonix was momentarily distracted by this, which allowed Cyclops to quickly trap both him and Emma and Pheonix in a Phoenix Egg Containment Unit created by the Beast. Emma then offered herself to be consumed by the Phoenix Force, and was.
Quentin Quire (Omega Kid) then appeared, broke open the containment egg, and asked the Pheonix fragment to bring Sophie Cuckoo back to life, which she (Emma/Pheonix) did. Although Quentin succeeded, Sophie decided to stay dead instead of returning to life to be with Kid Omega, she was still disgusted with him and/or his actions. Meanwhile, Emma Frost was still consumed by the Phoenix Force afer being inhabited inside the Phoenix Egg, but because she is only an Alpha Level mutant, unlike Jean Grey who is an Omega Level mutant, she was not capable of joining wit the entity for long. Jean Grey then forcibly separated Emma and the Phoenix. The Phoenix was surprised that Jean Grey was able to accomplish this act without any assistance. Jean then stated that she and the Pheonix were one and she would aways be the Phoenix. Cyclops then instructed the Stepford Cuckoos and Emma Frost to link all the X-Men together telepathically to sustain the Phoenix 's sanity. As they were helping her to keep her sanity, Jean Grey/Phoenix transformed itself into the White Phoenix.
But then the Shi'ar created an event horizon and Cyclops found himself "somewhere" with the White Phoenix. She then asked Scott to show her his eyes and they both bathed within his optic blast. As Cyclops awoke, he found himself and the other X-Men alive.
Powers
Jean Grey is an Omega Level Mutant which means that she is one of the most powerful mutants of the Marvel Universe. She has powerful telepathic capabilities. She can link her mind with other people and high level animals to communicate with them. She can also access their minds so as to read their thoughts and even control what they think. She can also possess them mentally so she can control their bodies and use their powers. She can also delete memories and cause trauma to be induced. She can project illusions into the minds of others so as to totally convnce them of whatever it is she wants them to see. She can also appear invisible to the mind of her target. She can also mentally induce or inhibit others physical pain.
She can project herself into the astral plane in which she can create psionic weapons that can hurt her targets mentally. While in the astral plane, Jean Grey is a great fighter as she knows how to use this power well. She can also manifest a psionic fire bird that can cause damage to her target both physically and mentally.
Her powers of telekinesis are phenomenal, she can levitate objects mentally and move them anywhere and anyway she wants with absolute complete control. This ability can also manifest as heat, force fields and flight. While using telekinesis, she ca determine the properties of any object she is levitating.
While being joined with the Phoenix Entity, she gains the ability to manipulate and generate fire with extreme heat. Jean herself, however, is immune and is not burned. The fire that she produces does not need oxygen, unlike other pyrokinetics, and can be used underwater and/or in space. She can breath and survive in space for a seemingly unlimited amount of time. As has been shown time and time again, Jean is always resurrected by the Phoenix Force with its powers to sustain life.

After Professor X finally convinced him, the X-Men were reformed. Mr. Sinister fooled Cyclops in to thinking that he had Jean, but of course itwas only a set-up. Jean was, unknown to anyone, in a hospital. When she finally awoke, the doctors asked for her name but she couldn't remeber anything, even her name.Jean's past was revealed and she is shown in her teenage years being confronted by Magneto and Professor X. She then joined the original X-Men. She was also shown defeating Magneto and he admits that Jean is stronger than what he originally thought. As she enters the Institute, Logan also developes a crush on her. Cyclops and Logan confront each other regarding this matter.
Back in the present time, Jean is being helped by a nurse named Marjorie on trying to recall her name. Marjorie starts speaking name after name and wouldn't stop even though Jean asked her to. Jean became confused and not ralizing what she was doing, lost control of her telekinetic powers. This caught Emma's attention when it registered on Cerebra. Emma then told Scott that she might have found Jean. They went to the location where Emma thought Jean would be. Meanwhile, Jean is being chased by the MRD in the hospital. She was eventually cornered by the MRD with Marjorie pointing her out to them. With Jean feeling extremely hopeless, she unintentionally manifested her Phoenix Powers whic caused an intense psychic wave that affected almost the entire city. Archangel, under Mr. Sinister's command, followed Jean and tortured her. Scott and Emma then found Jean and helped her. They soon discovered that the reason why Jean was not in mental contact with Scott was because she had no memory of him. During this time they were followed by Archangel. He was able to abduct Jean and take her to Mr. Sinister, who wanted genetic samples from her to create the ultimate mutant in combination with Scott's genes. The X-Men then appear and attempt to help, but the Marauders are too powerful for them to defeat. Jean then manifests her Phoenix Force and defeates the Marauders. Scott was able to calm her down and take her to the Institute for rest and promised her that she would regain her memories in conjunction with Rogue's abilities. Everyone at the institute then became unconscious, except Emma who was revealed to be an undercover agent of the Hellfire Club who now had Jean Grey.
The Hellfire Club was then able to claim Jean as one of their members. By using the combined powers of Emma and the Cuckoos, they mentally tricked Jean into doing what they want by using images of Scott and the Professor. But the mental contact was interrupted by Scott's connection to Jean. The Stepford Cuckoos then tried to release the Phoenix so they could be hosts, and succeeded. Cyclops, Emma and Jean then fought against the Phoenix while it consumed the bodies of the Cuckoos. Jean has rejoined the X-Men and her memories have since returned.
Movies
Jean Grey is played by Famke Janssen in the X-Men Trilogy.X-Men
Jean is the schools medical doctor and is dating Scott Summers. When Wolverine arrives at the school a love triangle starts between the three. In the first film her powers are very limited compared to her comic counterpart. She is a low level telekinetic, able to move small objects around. Her greatest feats in this movie where when she stopped Toad mid-leap, and when she held Wolverine steady as Storm used wind to levitate him to the top of the Statue of Libery. An early version of the "Phoenix effect" can be seen as a glow when she manages to help Wolverine achieve his goal of breaking the machine with his claws.X-Men: X-Men United
Jean's powers have started to developed into what would soon be the Phoenix. At the beginning of the film, Jean is watching over the students on a field trip to a museum. She tells Scott that she has been having bad dreams and that her telepathy has been growing stronger, and that since the event on Liberty Island her powers have been increasing. While on the run from the U.S. Air Force, in the X-Jet, Jean shows Phoenix like powers when she destroys a missile, causing her eyes to glow fire red. When she fights Cyclops who is under William Stryker's control, and is able to telekinetically shield herself from Cyclops' optic beam before dispersing it and scattering the energy about, causing it to destroy the dam's structural integrity, a red glow seems to come off of Jean at this point. Her power apparently reaches Phoenix level as she repairs the X-Jet wit her mind, lifts the jet into the air, telepathically stops Nightcrawler's teleportation to prevent him from rescuing her, and communicates with Cyclops through Professor X by telepathy, all while she holds back the resulting massive tidal wave from the dam's collapse. Jean is engulfed by fire at this point and, once she's sure she's gotten the X-Men out of danger, closes her eyes and lets the waters crash onto her. At the End of the movie as Jean narrates an explanation of evolution you can see the Phoenix Force flying below the surface of the water.X-Men: The Last Stand
When Jean died in the last film, it started a downward spiral in Scott. He is haunted by nightmares and telepathic messages. He returns to Alkali Lake, where he angrily releases the full force of his optic blasts into the waters. This in turns awakens the Phoenix. [Like in the comic, the Phoenix feeds off of the optic blast. It can be argued that Scotts outburst is what causes her rise.] They begin to kiss and she insists he remove his glasses as she is able to control his powers and stops his optic beams from emitting, but then apparently kills him by atomizing him with her telekinesis. [Although this is not shown on screen, it is apparently what happens.] When Scott is killed, Xavier is shown feeling pain and then sends out a telepathic message that has Wolverine and Storm running to his side. He sends them to Alkali Lake where they find Scott's glasses and an unconscious Jean Grey who is taken back to the Mansion. It is revealed by Xavier that since Jean was a young girl she had powers that were beyond all known limitations. Fearing that Jean could not control her vast powers, Xavier put psychic blocks around her subconscious mind to keep Jean's full powers at bay. Due to this, while growing up, Jean has developed a dual personality - one being her usual self and the other being her powerful and uninhibited side which calls itself the ' Phoenix' which emerges when she gets angry. Xavier leaves and Wolverine stays by Jean's side. When she awakens, she seems normal but is really the aggressive Phoenix. They kiss and when Jean snaps out of the Phoenixs hold she starts to have a nervous breakdown, causing thing to shake and burst. When Wolverine mentions Xavier, the Phoenix comes back full force and knocks Wolverine out, and crumbles the huge mental doors. She is next seen at her old childhood house, where Xavier meets Magneto. Once in the house, the Phoenix and Xavier begin a huge telepathic battle. Gravity reverses, and things begin to disintegrate, and so does Xavier. The Phoenix then leaves with Magneto. Near the movies end, during the attack on Alcatraz Island, Dark Phoenix unleashes her full power and destroys much of Worthington Labs, the X-Jet, and kills both mutants and humans along the way. Wolverine tells Storm to get everyone to safety while he stays behind, as he is the only one who can stop her [because of his healing factor]. He manages to get get up to Jean, who burns through his skin multiple times, only for it to re-surface long enough for him to plead for her to stop. She then asks him "you would die for these people" to which he replies "no, I would die for you". It's at that momet that Jean resurfaces and begs him to stop her. Wolverine tells Jean he loves her, and then stabs her with his claws. With that, Jean's destruction ceases and she smiles thankfully at Logan before she dies. Her gravestone is later seen next to Cyclops' and Xavier's. [Note: in the comics, Wolverine stabbing Phoenix is not enough to kill her.]Video Games
