"Your ancestors called it magic, you call it science"- If you saw the San Diego Comic-Con footage of the Thor movie, then you might recognize this quote that Thor says to Jane Foster. Natalie Portman, the woman who will bring Jane Foster's character to life, talked to Los Angeles Times about the "new layers to the character" she will be bringing. 

“I signed on to do it before there was a script. And Ken, who’s amazing, who is so incredible, was like, ‘You can really help create this character.‘ “

"I got to read all of these biographies of female scientists like Rosalind Franklin who actually discovered the DNA double helix but didn’t get the credit for it. The struggles they had and the way that they thought — I was like, ‘What a great opportunity, in a very big movie that is going to be seen by a lot of people, to have a woman as a scientist.’  She’s a very serious scientist. Because in the comic she’s a nurse and now they made her an astrophysicist. Really, I know it sounds silly, but it is those little things that makes girls think it’s possible. It doesn’t give them a [role] model of  ‘Oh, I just have to dress cute in movies.’”

I usually don't like when they make unnecessary changes, but Jane Foster's a pretty boring character, so it's fine,

It might have been an interesting angle if they could've pulled off the 12 Monkeys / Ultimates ambiguity as to whether Thor was really a god or just a crazy mutant, but the trailers seem to preclude that question (suppose we might question whether he's a god or an alien but since there's no question of sanity the dilemma is a lot less interesting- whether gods or aliens, the pantheon all actually exist).

Well, I guess it's better than, "Denise Richards: NUCLEAR PHYSICIST!"

I wonder if Portman's research will be wasted...

Fix

I guess she'll be pretty closer to Jane from the comic reimagining "Thor: The Mighty Avenger" (as will most of the movie as well, plot-wise). It's a nice modern reinterpretation that also does away with the Don Blake persona.

Of course she has to be an astrophysicist, because.... those have to be space pants because her... 0_0 
 
Alternatively you may ask, Thor Odinson, are those pants made and crafted in ye old Asgard because I must say my weather controlling friend, your rear is godly!

Imagine if somebody did the movie about Superman with Lois Lane as a spoiled wealthly socialite instead of reporter. Or Spider-Man movie with MJ Watson as the agent of SHIELD.
