Who Wants To See Star Trek In IMAX?

Posted by G-Man (31781 posts) - - Show Bio

It's hard to believe that Star Trek was released four months ago.  Paramount has decided to bring it back to select IMAX theater.  Starting this Friday, you can try to find one of the (approximate) 100 IMAX theaters showing the movie to enjoy once again.  '

What is a little strange about this is it will only be running for two weeks.  So you better get there fast before it's gone.  Apparently it only ran for two weeks back in May because it had to make room for Night At The Museum 2.  IMAX movies usually run for at least four weeks.

So if the first movie got you energized, click over to IMAX.com to find a theater near you.

Thank you for this, G-Man. I didn't see it in theaters, and now I can see it in IMAX. Fantastic.

As much as I would like to. There is only one place within my area that has an IMAX. The owner had some 'tax issues' and was arrested. The place sits there empty, across the courtyard from a separate movie theater.

I can't watch films in iMax. I've tried a few, always get sick feeling. Sad, because this would be awesome there.

That happened to Transformers 2, too.  It was only on at the IMAX for 2 weeks before it was pushed out of the way by Harry Potter.  But Star Trek was out at IMAX before... I remember refusing to go see it :)

Oh boy! I do! I do! Star Trek was easily the best action movie this year.

I think with the success of Batman Dark Knight which I believe was shot with IMAX camera's, Star Trek is bound to be a hit visually if done in this format, the plot the next movie... Well that's a different story!

I never saw a movie in IMAX, but if there is more lighting flares I am all over this movie :)

I might catch this. It would seem to generally be an enlargement from the standard print. I can't recall if any of the film was shot in the IMAX format. The number of IMAX screens available to a market would generally dictate how long a print is run. They usually seem to have to shuffle the runs around to the available screens, which would be a practical method of filling the seats and sharing the screen time with other IMAX features.

It wasn't shot in IMAX.  I seem to recall the "experts" saying how this wasn't a true IMAX movie because of that.

When it's enlarged to IMAX format from the standard 35mm prints, or 65/70mm or equivalent video, they tend to say it's not a true IMAX movie, only a blow-up, which technically is true. But some of the blow-ups I've seen weren't bad, like Matrix Reloaded and Watchmen. It's the same detail, however, as what you get from a standard theater print, only blown pixel-by-pixel to the IMAX frame.

With a movie originally photographed in IMAX, or any of the IMAX formats, like Omnimax and IMAX 3D, you're getting the much higher definition captured in the original image. Some of the shots in The Dark Knight were shot with IMAX cameras in the IMAX format, and you can see the real HD image in the IMAX projection version. I was lucky enough to have seen Darknight in IMAX. I also saw Watchmen in IMAX and standard widescreen, and they looked the same. Watchmen was a blow-up. But the IMAX blow-ups are much bigger, and the sound system alone is possibly worth the price of admission for movies like those.
