Star Trek 2 Release Date

Ain't It Cool News reported today that Star Trek finally has a release date!

the Untitled STAR TREK sequel is scheduled to be released June 29th, 2012... Now, it is also true that JJ is not officially helming this one, at least that hasn't been formally announced or decided yet.

June 29th of 2012. I'm glad to see it's at least 2 1/2 years. I hate it when sequels get rushed. JJ Abrams, as Ain't It Cool reported, is not attached yet, but I'm hoping he continues his brand of this franchise. I've always been a big fan of the Star Trek films, even the bad ones, but I never really got into the show. This new film, which I remained skeptical about when I first heard about it, really raised the bar of the franchise.
There's so many new opportunities now since this film takes place in it's own parallel universe. They can essentially do whatever they want. From what I've seen on many other website, most people really want to see Khan. But maybe that be a little too soon. But since there is no script out there right now, we can only speculate what could or could not happen.
Hopefully, everyone from the original film, especially Simon Pegg, signs on for the sequel. I thought the cast worked really well together, especially the Kirk/Spock/Uhura dynamic.
Are you guys excited? What do you hope to see in the upcoming sequel?

I hope JJ will direct it - I have a good feeling he will. I think what I love about this is that since Nero altered the Star Trek timeline with Kirk's father being dead & Spock's mother being dead. So anything can happen & anyone could die now.
For the next one I would love to see Kahn. I heard talks about Nestor Carbonell possibly being Kahn. That's just perfect casting if that happens cause he's a dead ringer for a younger Ricardo Montalban (R.I.P.)

@Inferiorego:  I think the opposite.  I would prefer the sequel got under way sooner.  I don't think its a matter of rushing things at all.  This applies to comic book/superhero movies.
While I know the studio was testing the water with this "new" Star Trek, perhaps they could simply film 2 other movies in the same manner as Lord of The Rings?
Question I have:  Will Uhura get nekkid???  :)

I can't wait for this. Zach Quinto was like a young Leonard Nimoy in the last film.
I hope that Khan can be in this episode too.

Ultimate Star Trek is awesome. I can't wait for the sequel, and hopefully many more to come. Who wouldn't sign on to play such iconic characters given the opportunity?

They should leave Kahn alone, it can never be as good. Onwards to pastures new, first star on the left and straight on 'til morning.

Are we going to get another round of a befuddled Nimoy not sure where he is and why he's there?

Although I grew up with bits and pieces of Star Trek in my childhood I was never a die-hard fan. I was always a Star Wars boy at heart. But I must say, the Star Trek reboot was better than the last Star Wars movies combined. It totally rocked and I can't wait for the sequel...

All the actors were pretty dry and the story had a few plot holes. But I guess that's Star Trek in a nutshell, right? :P
