ComicVine's Star Trek Review

Posted by G-Man (26150 posts) - 4 years, 1 month ago - Show Bio

Here is our massive video.  We don't usually run videos this long.  With this movie, we simply had a lot to talk about.  Captain Cascader is a big Star Trek fan.  So you'll get the perspective of a hard-core fan and a "normal" fan (if you can call someone that digs Star Trek "normal").  We've also done something we don't usually do.  At about five minutes into this lengthy video, we put up a SPOILER warning.  We don't really give away the entire movie but we do discuss certain parts and didn't want to have to dance around it.

Watch the beginning.  After you see the movie, come back and check out the video.  Or if you don't have immediate plans to see the movie, go ahead and watch the video.  Maybe you'll see Star Trek in a new light.  (Hopefully without a ton of lens flares...)

I liked the light in the camera. It did give it a more realistic feel for me. Maybe Kirk finds that guy in the ice cave because that guy was also heading in the same direction to the base. Not too much of a coincidence.

The Kobiyashi Maru sequence was awesome(Star Trek II was the first BTW).

Spock was abandoned in the cave from his mission in STAR TREK COUNTDOWN.  If you haven't read the series or gotten the trade, that part is going to be kind of "wtf?".

I think that it's cool that we have a trans-warp drive this early in the series.

Let's face it, Next Gen, DSN, and Voyager have never happened to this point.

It works.  It totally works.

I loved the movie! Easily my favorite this year. The retcon made perfect sense and it was believable just like Cap said

I loved Karl Urban as Bones! He totally had the part down. I was really pleased with the cast choices. I too was a little sad they didn't have the old score in the beginning. And I wanted more expressed stoicism from Spock. That's why he's awesome, a great contrast to the bold and brash Kirk. But I really liked this movie a lot.

Good review boys. I'll be seeing it tomorrow I think....I watched the spoilers anyways.

Star Trek was easily the best movie I have seen since The Dark Knight... I loved the entire film.

Captain Kirk was a fu#king Gangsta... and showed why he is better than Picard once again...

Mr. Spock was Tight as Hell...

Scotty rocked the House hard during his Parts

Bones was fu#king Hilarious

And Also... I loved Uhura's Role in the Film... its About Damn Time a Black Chick Got some Real Love in a Role in a Sci Fi Movie... and dont Give Me that Halle Berry as Storm sh!t as another Example... Everyone Knows Halle was Terrible as Storm...

But Zoe as Uhura ? Hmmm... Not Bad

What if you are new to the Star Trek? Would you enjoy the movie?

As a kid I watched some old movies, but I don't recall them too well. Is the movie good for us, new potential fans?

Ahhhhhh......

Retcon's abound...

wait, this is time travel and Star Trek..... we've always had retcons...

ok, so i understand what Cascader was saying about the problems in making a new Star Trek series, especially with the mesh of trying to build the old universe and the New Universe into one constantant universe that both old and new fans can enjoy.... to be honest, the best way i think they could do this is with a series based on the Temporal Cold War that was estabslished in both Enterprise, Voyager and DS9...

We have the Temporal Cold War in Star Trek, this in canon information... Agents from the 27th century are always going back in time and trying to change things for the worse, or the better, as shown in this latest movie...

I think if they did a series, maybe based on the Enterprise J class that was seen in Enterprise as a Temporal Class Vessel, we could actually have both the old universe, at the beginning of the series, and then show how the numerous Temporal Incursions (People going back in time to mess with the timeline) have altered the universe, that way we actually have a tie in sequence that links both the Old Universe and the New Universe into one constantant universe flowing directly from Star Trek Canon, that way it would keep both Old Fans and New Fans happy and allow everyone to enjoy the entire Star Trek Universe as one.

Just saw it, never watched the old show but I loved this movie it was great funny and Kirk was great. (Oh and that Green Girl was Hot)

Saw it this morning. AWESOME!!! The actors and actresses were awesome. The retcon was too. I give it an A, 9/10, 4.5/5,90/100, etc. I kind of found it ironic that the FX were done by Industrial Light & Magic...you know...George Lucas' Company. Anyway, can't wait for a 2nd installment.

Kobeyashi Maru is Wrath of Khan (2)

Captain Cascader is adorable.

I think they could wangle a new series (totally taking the place of BSG) out of this.

Good review guys.. IN DEPTH TO THE MAX. And good job to Slurpy McSlurpsalot's camera work.

Bugs Bunny invented red matter when he was perfecting his "anvil" attack.

Blame him for the retcon.

I really liked it. I just can't believe it took them 18 minutes to mention Spock and Uhura. It was great, a nice surprise because from the previews I suspected Uhura and Kirk. They did have the first interracial kiss on television after all.

As for rotating directors how awesome would it be for one of the better Star Trek cast members to direct at some point. I'm talking about Nimoy himself, maybe LeVar Burton or maybe even Jonathan Frakes directing a new Star Trek feature film.

As for what the future movies should be about, with the retcon anything can be remade, combined and done well. I'm not saying making 'Trouble with Tribbles' a movie but redoing 'Space Seed' would have a little symmetry for a second movie, could bring in the Borg earlier for another, Cardassians, Klingons, anything.

And I could maybe see another television series coming out of this eventually, possibly in the same new reality, maybe even the actual next generation. And as a final note......of course Kirk made out with the green girl. That was so satisfying.

Topless Robot posted a video that could explain why the Beastie Boys were heard in the movie.  Inside joke?

Seen it Saw it Loved it.

It was cool seeing the whole "Kobayashi Maru" incident play out. But since everything was altered wouldn't that mean that the version we get to see in this movie isn't the original way it played out?
