@heraldofganthet: I guess magic is the closest to it. They underwent a special kind of training called the Hercules method which makes you superhuman however it also makes you want to kill everything you see.

Ah. So whoever designed/administers this "Hercules Method" is the puppet master behind the curtain? What's their ultimate end game and what's Luther and Jack's place in it? Are there more people like them, or are they special cases?

@heraldofganthet: Cain is the one who designed the method. The first murderer in history. We heard about him in Volume 1 and saw him at the end of Volume 2:

Luther accidentally used the Hercules method not knowing what it was. No Jack and Luther aren't the only ones. In volume 1 we saw another called the Librarian, another in volume 2 called the Binder and we also know that Cain and most of the other famous murderers in history also used the Hercules method. Jack's place in the story was simply that he was caught by the Binder (who hunts down killers that get out of hand) and forced to work for him. Binder wanted Luther dead so he sent Jack after him.
