Working Stiffs all right.
Lets face it for a Zombie Gwen is hot and Ellie is cute. This book visually proves guys can be Working Stiffs.... Okay that was a cheesy intro, but I got your attention.
Visually, the Allred team of Mike and Laura create a very classic looking style comics, with a color palette that is very smooth on the eyes. There are times where the Text is not need to be read and we fully understand the page. This command of the visuals makes I, Zombie just as much Mike Allred's book as it is Chris Roberson's.
Chris Roberson give us more background. With one full issue and the short story in the House of Mystery Halloween Annual this book is coming alone nicely. The House of Mystery annual is loosely mentioned and this issue give enough of Mr. Mummy to give a recap those who read the Annual and it is enough info to keep the murder more of a mystery for people who jumped in from only issue #1.
This issue is nice in we get to understand Gwen's relationship with her consumed corpse's life essence. Gwen paints lovely pictures to piece together the murder she has now committed to solving. These picture are a nice change in Mike Allred's normal style that it shows how talented he really is.
We also learn why Ellie "lives" so close to the cemetery, it is a sad concept. I wonder if its true.
Every Character is developed a little in this issue, which is nice. No page seems wasted. The issue loose one star because it is an issue that really is dependent on the House of Mystery short story, it almost assumes you read it. Which it is not a safe thing to do. the Allred's and Mr. Roberson are crafting a nice monster tale, one that has placed a new twist to monsters. With the cliff hanger ending I am sure to pick up issue 3.
