Marvel Studios Releases 'Iron Man 3' Movie Synopsis

Posted by No_Name_ (17403 posts) - - Show Bio

It really feels like the third movie is going to take Iron Man back to square one, in a sense. In the first film we saw Tony Stark (played by actor Robert Downey Jr.) literally become Iron Man. We watched as the character overcame odds and built the suit that turned him into a hero. In the second film, we watched him kick a lot of butt but as "top dog." In the third film it seems director Shane Black wants to take Stark back to his roots in the first film and place him at a disadvantage; at least that's what we've gathered from the recently released synopsis.

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

We already know that there's a good chance Black drew inspiration from IRON MAN: EXTREMIS, a story arc where Stark pushes the limits of the suit even further; so the last line in the synopsis is pretty telling. "Does the man make the suit, or does the suit make the man?"

Iron Man 3 is set to hit theaters on May 3rd, 2013 and will feature Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle as James Rhodes, Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin and many more. Are you looking forward to the upcoming movie?

Still not a fan of that gold chest plate, but I can't wait otherwise!

This looks pretty awesome. I can't wait.

Sounds like a strong film. Not the usual weighed down third film in a trilogy, especially after the weight of the Avengers adding pressure to Tony's world.

Color me excited.

Dark Reign, with a hint of Extremis?

HELL YES

I'm still dying to know if the rumors of General Ross cameo-ing along side AIM in this film are true (please be true! Rulk vs Hulk in a film. Please Marvel, make it happen.)

Basically Iron Man is awesome and watch blow up stuff with Black Sabbath and AC/DC in the background...... I'm throwing my money at the screen now!

I like how they go on without mentioning who is the enemy whose reach knows no bounds.

I kinda like the new look for the suit. You gotta love Tony's changing wardrobe.

Same here. Love how every movie so far has featured at least 2 suits, and I'm sure this one will as well. Can't wait, sounds a little more intense than the last 2.

I wonder what they mean by destroying tony's "personal world" The death of Pepper? O_O I mean even if they're talking about the iron man suit he can always build another one......

#13 Posted by Vermoot (95 posts) - - Show Bio

@sentryman555: the death of Happy Hogan ? As he's played by Jon Favreau who's not the movies director anymore, it would make sense. They'd never kill Pepper, though : she didn't die in the comics, and Gwyneth Paltrow is a lovely sight in the movie.

@sentryman555: Taking down Stark International?

#15 Posted by Danial79 (2327 posts) - - Show Bio

My guess is that "personal world destroyed" means they'll drain his back account. This also fits with the "Stark is left to survive by his own devices" line.

How is this news? I remember reading a synopsis for Iron Man 3 on Wikipedia after my second time seeing The Avengers in theaters.

Please do extremis.

Please.

Please I beg you.

@Danial79: Seems a bit similar to another recent third film in a superhero series though, doesn't it?

#19 Posted by dmkicksballs13 (110 posts) - - Show Bio

If they borrow heavily from the extremis storyline and they do Mandarin well (I don't know if Ben Kingsley is the right choice) then they'll be fine.

Ha! That never even clicked :) Though that doesn't necessarily mean they won't go there.

Yes! I'm happy they are using two of his best stories!

Am I the only one who feels as though they didn't really say anything about whats in the story in that synopsis?

#23 Posted by cmaprice (809 posts) - - Show Bio

I just hope it's better than the subpar second film.

oh I didn't think about the death of Happy Hogan! But between him and Pepper who everyone at this point has to know they're going out. I thought Pepper would be the likely target.

That could make sense with the whole suit makes the man or man makes the suit thing. Kind of what they did in Dark Knight Rises with Batman but I don't really see what tony can do without his suits.......

Is that the Extremis or Bleeding Edge armor? It looks clean as heck

#26 Posted by RedheadedAtrocitus (6885 posts) - - Show Bio

Two things come to mind when I think of this synopsis. On the one hand, the Extremis story arc is a dead giveaway. On the other is this song...

Seriously..."Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?"...who can deny the similarities between this song and what Stark must do in this upcoming film?

what has Shane Black done before??? I don't know about this movie.

#29 Posted by nerfherderIV (15 posts) - - Show Bio

I never read too many Iron man comics but I do enjoy the films. I am not digging the new armor at all. However! Its genius! If you change the armor you add a sence of something new and different that has not been in the first two movies. So I hate it but I understand it. IDK....... Tony Stark is Awesome. Right guys?

#30 Posted by ARMIV2 (8271 posts) - - Show Bio

Well, that does it. I'm officially too excited now. Are you happy, Marvel? Now the rest of my year has been ruined because of the anticipation for this movie.

I hope you guys are happy.

Well it looks like Marvel's coming out swinging after their grand slam success. I'm glad they used the success to inspired them to keep making great stories and delving deeper and deeper into such established characters instead of thinking that they've peaked and anyone will come see anything they slap their name on without having to try like so many other franchises do. Well played Marvel.

Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin... oh lordy lordy lord. Looks like Gandhi's finally resorting to violence.

#33 Posted by Lvenger (17906 posts) - - Show Bio

A combination of the Extremis story arc and the Mandarin portrayed as he should be by Ben Kingsley would round off the Iron Man trilogy nicely.

#34 Posted by Gotham331 (173 posts) - - Show Bio

I wonder if Shane Black has seen Dark Knight Rises?

#35 Posted by BatWatch (2352 posts) - - Show Bio

It sounds to me like Pepper Potts might die sometime early in the third movie? Anybody concur?

am i the only one who finds these synopsis' completely vague and unrevealing? almost pointless.

#38 Posted by Emperormeister734 (803 posts) - - Show Bio

Well I'm ready for it

#39 Posted by GR2Blackout (2564 posts) - - Show Bio

Sounds like every OTHER third part of a superhero trilogy.

I mean, come on.

Spider-Man 3, The Dark Knight Rises....

They get put to the test with one of their "hardest enemies yet" (Venom, Bane...) blah blah blah hot chick introduced to trilogy (Gwen Stacy, Catwoman...), blah blah blah somethin' bad happens (Peter gets symbiote, Bruce gives up being Batman....), blah blah blah in the end somebody dies (Harry Osborn, ...), etc., etc.

But I'm still excited for this movie, though.

If they pull it off like TDKR, that's a relief.

If they pull it off like Spider-Man 3, well.... let's just say it can never be as bad as "X-Men Origins: Barakapool".

Finally, Iron Man vs Mandarin on the big screen!

Plus, I hear there's an after-credits scene with Ant-Man!

I really want this to be Extremis.
