I don't think you can classify ironman as a douche, read some of his first stories. He was a sheltered man who soon came fact face with the horrors of the world. After escaping near death he devoted his life to helping the world instead of staying shut off. Not to mention he hass done a lot more then just protect his interests(fighting street gangsters and terrorists). He has always beaten himself up for selling weapons, but time and again he has made it right. He treated his employes stellar case in point: when happy hit some scrub badmouthing tony, stark almost fired him", taking in rhodey, and trying to make them safe. The avengers would have fallen apart without him.
People think of him as a douche becaus he is eccentric, he does not try to hide who he is. Going to civil war(I think nick fury would have fit his role better) he just wannted to make everyone safer, including heroes. Although he made mistakes(so did cap) he was doomed to come out in a negative light. And when the president put osborn in charcge, he tried to break his own head to save their identities. Ironman is a relatbe hero like spider-baby, but the problem is he is relatble to that part of human nature we try to bury but at the same time helps us get through the day... and reminds us from the start of our lives to the second of our deaths we controlled our own fates.
