I read the article about Kevin Feige talking about IF Robert Downey would ever leave Iron Man - Well he can't exactly go on for 20 years unlike Hemsworth, Evans, Johansson and even Jeremy Renner - Not so sure 'bout Ruffalo though... Anyways, Downey is 47 - I'll say he can last the next 2 Avengers sequels, which in my estimation would be within the next 10 years and the Avengers trilogy will be done and so would Robert. I can say that he's very serious about his portrayal, he even said that he'd hate if someone would replace him and that he'd go on as long as he wants - I'm alright with that, but knowing Marvel, they may eventually make another Iron Man trilogy in 15 years and use a fresh, new unknown actor like originally planned, to make them big - And no, they definitely won't reboot the series, because they've worked too hard with this cinematic universe that they'll just continue on as if nothing happened :/. Like I said, that's if they do make another trilogy with a new actor...
Iron Man
Character » Iron Man appears in 11204 issues.
Tony Stark was the arrogant son of wealthy, weapon manufacturer Howard Stark. Tony cared only about himself, but he would have a change of heart after he was kidnapped by terrorists and gravely injured. Pressured to create a weapon of mass destruction, Stark instead created a suit of armor powerful enough for him to escape. Tony used his vast resources and intellect to make the world a better place as The Invincible Iron Man. Stark's super hero identity led him to become a founding member of the Avengers.
Can Robert Downey jr really go on for another 10 years?
Who knows,The iron man movie franchise could be like the James Bond Franchise, the first actor is Perfect, another is extremely comedic, and the last one becomes more dark and "realistic".
I'm not sure if there are going to be so many Iron Man movies to bring up this question. There's Iron Man 3, and, honestly, as much as I love the movies, thet could stop at the third or fourth.
But I think Robert Downey Jr IS Tony Stark. They're physically similar and his performance was one of the reasons the films worked. It's like they took Tony out of the comic book, just great.

After all Marvel has built up with this Cinematic Universe, it's not going to end. They will "James Bond" Tony Stark and find a replacement. It's a sad truth. But I'm sure Marvel will look very hard to find a great replacement, because they know that hate will come with the replacing of RDJ, and if they picked a terrible replacement, they'd get an even bigger backlash from the fans.
All good things will come to an end, and that includes RDJ's Tony Stark. It will be sad to see him go, but Feige has said that they will not hesitate to let the show go on. They already replaced War Machine and Hulk.
His portrayal of Tony Stark is the most definitive any actor has had on a comic book character. In 30 years, after many an Iron Man reboot, his will be the name everyone talks about. Much like Connery's Bond. And actually yeah, I think he has another 10 years. 50 is the new 40, after all.
Yesterday it was announced that RDJ had left and Jon Hamm is replacing him and I almost cried, but then I realized it was april fools since no other site posted anything like that. Even still, the risk is great with contract negotiations coming up. Let's hope his ego doesn't get the better of Marvel's wallet.
how many films did he sign on for
rumors has it, he signed for another 3 movies.... I think one of them includes Avengers 2....so don't worry pal.
He is here for 8 years and final Avengers movie is coming in 2019 (3 years from now). So he will be there 11 years and he even said that he could even go beyond that. There were always news with him being and not being in Iron-man 4 but his latest statement was "I think I could do another one".
Can Downey Jr continue playing the character for another part of the decade? Probably not. Could some other actor replace Downey Jr as Tony Stark when he will pass the role, but also to be as good or even better than Downey Jr? I say yes. Downey Jr have never actually played a comic book accurate version of Tony Stark. His version of Tony Stark is vastly different from the comics. In comics, Stark (before retcons that happened after movies) was humorless, dark, uber-serious, and very grounded. Tony Stark should be like Don Draper, not Charlie Sheen. That's why I think that Jon Hamm would've been a great actor to take the role of Iron Man.
