In this issue, we revisit Iron Man's origin into the original suit, which is ironic because at the same time, Tony is changing into a new hero once agian. This double/paradox of transformations has a lot of symbolism in it. But hey, we're just simple comic book readers. We don't care about symbolism.
Well, Ellis thought of us and therefore threw in action as well. Granov's fire artwork is his strongsuit and in this issue, Iron Man manages to fire up his flame thrower quite a bit.
This story was good and the ending really sets up the next issue. Although I much prefured watching Iron Man's origin on the movie screen, it was still a great treat to visit how Tony's first major transformation occured. It was really quite a treat. A treat that was made even more wonderful by Ellis's amazing story telling abilities and Granov's constant 11 out of 10 artwork. Honestly, this guy must be like some sort of genious to paint things the way he does.

Great writing from Warren Ellis combined with great artwork from Adi Granov really helped kick start a rebirthing of a character a few years back from bland billionaire to someone a bit more edgy and compelling. Extremis is a great storyline, from the use of a parody of an old leftie journalist in issue one to some thrilling set pieces that lead to Stark being rendered helpless by, of all things, a car. This issue contains a reimagining of Iron Man's origin with Ho Yinsen having a bit more sass than I can ever recall. However, it's the sequence where Tony has his new armour inserted into his bone marrow by the extremis process that's really compelling and more than a little disturbing. Readers identify with Tony's scientist buddy, Maya, who finds Tony's nonchalance with mixing his armour up with his body chemistry a little sickening (well, I did anyway). Stark's not only driven here but also, possibly, making some crazy choices. Great writing.
