A Complex Character Study
So, I'll be the first to admit that I made a mistake when judging the first of this series. I became a little wrapped up in what I thought Iron Fist was rather than seeing who he actually is. And this series nails that right on the head. Yes, it's not as humorous or light as some of the other series, but it has a very string and charismatic flair to it as it shows readers a deeper characterization for something of a main player in the Marvel universe, and it's about time he got the proper treatment.
The art here is what really stands out; each page offers something new and refreshing, and really brings this world to life. From the awesome silhouetted kung fu poses to the old, map-like texture to the segments that take place in the past, there is always a moment to marvel at. The primary story may seem a little stock to some, and yes, it hasn't quite gotten underway. But what's being done with Danny Rand as a person is brilliant, as I feel like I'm getting a much better idea of him as a person through his memories and his reactions in the here and now.
Some may be put off by the darker tone and nature of the series, as that has been a pretty string theme as of late, but I embrace it as one of the better examples of this as of late. And, once the conflict in present day picks up a little, there'll be nothing stopping this series from being a must read. And the ending page of this issue has me hooked; this story has great things coming.
