Overview

In an alternate-universe 1930’s metropolis, MICHAEL IRON is a loyal member of the powerful SYNDICATE, a vicious crime organization led by the boisterous BIG DADDY. He is a soldier in the three-way battle for power between THE SYNDICATE, THE GOVERNMENT, and the ominous religious group known only as THE ORDER. Iron has done right by Big Daddy, shedding much blood for his crew, but a double-crossing gangster, a technological genius, and a beautiful angel, have other plans for him. Lucky for Iron, he’s pumped full of “the rOid” and the strongest man on the planet! But will his strength be enough to escape the pain and death of THE CITY?!?

It is no secret that the art of Jason Rubin's comic, "Iron and the Maiden" is beautifully done but on closer inspection the art itself has a whimsical feel to it. By the shpe of the characters' eyes alone you can see a sort of Disney-esque approach which if you've read Iron and the Maiden you would realize is unbecoming of for the sort of violence that goes on here. I would recommend that they find the artists who worked with Alan Moore or Frank Miller on their dark comics.

When I first saw the cover of Iron and the Maiden I fell in love, after I read the synopsis of the series I was pining for it which is why I am also very critical of it. How could something with such beautiful art, such an intriguing concept and a catchy title not make it? The last book itself is a cliff hanger? Did Jason Rubin give up? Did he pass away? Is that an excuse? Michael Turner (May he rest in peace)'s "Fathom" lived on after him as did his "Soulfire" so why is "Iron and the Maiden" still in a frozen state in the no longer published catacombs?

Back to this issue. Who is Michael Irons and why is his character so ambigious? When he storms into the Order's territory he is cool and calm, so the cool dark quiet type? No. Later on we see Michael lose his temper and grab Kevlin at the neck of his shirt. So which is it? Is Michael a hot tempered grunt not unlike Vegeta from Dragonball or is he more cool and broody like Angel the vampire with a soul?

Whoever Michael Irons is he's a big bad sydicate member and you'd think he can have any girl there is but he stops and begins to want to show mercy to one teenager he happened to stumble upon wearing a white nightie?

Which reminds me. How is it that Angel jumps out of the way when Joey starts shooting? You'd think a big sister like her would take a bullet for her younger siblings, right?

I don't know I just wish they had worked on this a little more because I really like the concept and the art and feel given time and hard work Iron and the Maiden could have become one of those praised original concepts rivalring that of Marvel's Runaways.

If you are not reading Iron and the Maiden, you should be. So far this series has more than met the hype. The artwork is spectacular and the storyline is compelling.

Rubin has a fresh angle on the classic Mob tale of greed, vice and sex. He adds a level of complexity with a corrupt religious organization and City Hall.

The setting and storyline allows for a great range of artistic creativity - they have wonderful melded a futuristic look while maintaining a feel of American cities in the 1930's.

The character's have great depth and believability - even with their technical and pharmaceutical enhancements.

Additionally, the book is more violent and sexual than the norm which is actually refreshing for the older reader since it brings a different sensibility to the book.

As a final treat, the covers created by some of the most noted artist are excellent, plus Aspen has given us a good lengthy book each time.

Do yourself a favor and check it out.
