Iraq controls the region known as Mesopotamia (Greek:Land between the Rivers), the areas between rivers Tigris and Euphrates. It has been a major center of human civilization since the 6th millennium BC. It has been the center of the Akkadian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Seleucid, Parthian, Sassanid and Abbassid Empires. It has also served as part of the wider Achaemenid (Persian), Roman, Rashidun, Umayyad, Mongol, Ottoman and British Empires. Iraq gained its independance from the United Kingdom in 1932.Iraq borders Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iran.
