 Iran is both the 18th largest country in the world and the 18th most populous. The capital and largest city is Tehran. With about 7 million inhabitants, Tehran is the 16th most populous city on the planet.  
 
Iran is the successor to various Persian Empires and Kingdoms extant since the 6th century BC. It borders Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Caspian Sea seperates it from Russia and Kazakhstan.
