The Simmering Pot is set to Boil
THE GOOD
It feels like Invincible 115 came out a long time ago... Either way I love seeing a new issue out. From the massive action packed issue that was 115, 116 comes as a nice palette cleanser. There is a lot of new information getting thrown at us. Kirkman quickly introduces the state the world is in after recent events and it is really intriguing. Mark is having a difficult time adjusting and we really see is struggles. There is great dialogue between him and his father, Eve, and another individual who makes an untimely appearance. The contrast between the peace of Earth and an event still taking place elsewhere helps the reader see just how great the state of Earth is. I do love the way that Kirkman threw in those little breaks. It really helped the story telling and created a tone of foreboding.
Let's talk about the art. Ryan Ottley is the perfect man for this book. PERFECT. And I never thought it possible but I think his art looks better being coloured by Jean-Francois Beaulieu. The art is absolutely fantastic! The colours of the sky and people's faces are amazing. You can see them grow red from anger and the costumes and clothing look even better than before. I think it is fitting now that we are getting out of the superhero-ness of the book and into almost a sci-fi title. This switch up makes this new chapter of the book very exciting.
THE BAD
What is there to argue with besides having to wait another month now? This book is the greatest on the shelf.
THE VERDICT
Kirkman and Ottley are geniuses. If you want a superhero book not from the big two, start reading Invincible. I am certain that Kirkman has littered in loads of threads that he will be coming back and forth to from this issue. This is where everything changes. The dialogue is fantastic and complimented so perfectly by Ottley's art. Beaulieu's colours add a new tone for the book that promises to hold up the new direction that Kirkman plans to take it, based on that last page. Also, that scene with Eve's parents, her dad always has been a wiener. This issue proves it.
