Battle Beast goes toe-to-toe with Thragg! Will Battle Beast get the long awaited, and glorious, death in battle that he has craved?
After the events of Rex, basically killing every hero on Earth, we see what is happening with characters, Thragg and Battle Beast. While the two have been M.I.A. for a long while, it turns out both might need something from the other. Battle Beast wants a glorious death in combat; while Thragg wants a partner for nefarious plans to "protect" his people. However, only one of them is getting what they want, and that leads to a blown out fight between these two powerhouses!
Don't get me wrong, both characters are extremely interesting and have had some pretty amazing fights in the past, but this one wasn't all that spectacular. Of course, Ryan Ottley brings his A-game and makes the violent fight scenes, ultra-violent while the colors just make blood splatters, intestines, etc. really "POP!" off the page; but, ultimately this was a pretty boring fight. You can tell with such a massive and crazy last couple of issues with Rex, this Battle Beast vs. Thragg issue was a subtle sign for the reader to be at ease, and not have to worry of anything crazy or major happening [again]. That's not to say this entire fight doesn't have a larger purpose, but at this point, the fight wasn't as amazing as it usually is and it was over way too quickly. Whether either of the characters die or not is beside the point. It's all about how this issue was handled after the events with Rex, and it acting just as a "bathroom break" for those who have been at the edge of their seat waiting for the Rex story arc to be over. (Because let's face it, the Rex story arc the last couple of issues, had everyone reading it not using the bathroom.)
However, at the end of this issue, the most interesting thing about this issue was seeing all the pregnant bug women, and seeing how that possibly ties in with restarting the Viltrumite race. (Since this is a race of aliens that Omni-Man had a relationship with and conceived a child, maybe this was his doing!) The speculation of is the father is, adds to the tension of what all is happening.
In conclusion, if you have read and loved Invincible, you'll more than likely love this issue. If you are new, and this is your first time, you'll be confused, but you'll be able to stick with the series as the next major story event occurs! 3 out of 5.
