@comicfetish: I think the original silver age costume was sort of a combination of Batman and Catwoman, the costume has just evolved from there.

I always thought she was based on an Owl.

Call me shallow, but this will always be my favorite Huntress costume:

Clocktower

Purple. That's the theme. With kinda pointy bat ear mask.

This. I too like this costume the best and agree that she seems to be based on an owl. It makes sense considering that it is the most well known nocturnal bird of prey. I feel that the points on her mask were made to resemble the "horns" on a the Great Horned Owl.

My favourite is the one from mid 90s that looks like it would actually protect her in battle.  It was key in the "contagion storyline that the heros have full body protection from any exposure for instance.  I do think the modern one is a little silly, if I was the Huntress I can't see putting that on every night to go fight crime.   I think Jim Lee would have done a lot better to cover up at least her midriff and her thighs, but people that complain about this costume forget what the silver age costume looked like.  It pretty much had about the same amount of body protection but also looked a lot worse.

It needs to stay like this

on at least one of the 50 + earths, Bertinelli should have become Batgirl instead of Barbara & wear one of those fully covering costumes. Then that universe would implode because she is too Hot to be that covered up.
