Gon might be a country boy, but he has high aspirations. Despite his Aunt Mito's protests, Gon decides to follow in his father's footsteps and become a legendary Hunter. The Hunter hopefuls begin their journey by storm-tossed ship, where Gon meets Leorio and Kurapika, the only other applicants who aren't devastated by bouts of seasickness.
- 1. "The Day of Departure"
Years ago Gon was saved from the attack if a wild beast by Kaito, a wandering hunter that happened to be the apprentice of Gin Freaks, the father of the boy. After he learned about his father occupation he decided that he too will follow his path and become an hunter. Now it finally time, after getting his aunt permission and a touching farewell with the different habitants of the island, Gon goes of into his journey.
- 2. "An Encounter in the Storm"
The first test to become a hunter begins at the same time that two new characters make their first appearances: Kurapika, a young survivor of a dead clan seeking revenge for his lost & Leorio, a man seeking fortune. The two hunters to be are at each others throats until Gon use them to help poor fellow in perils resolving their differences at the same occasion.
The threes companions continue on their way to become an hunter when a second test face them on the form of a quiz, the right answer will bring them to the examination grounds but if they are wrong a certain death await them. If two loved ones got into trouble and you could only save one, which will you choose?
- 4. "Kiriko: Wicked Magical Vulpes"
While in search of their navigators the group of wannabe hunter’s fall into a trap made by a family of rat – fox, but this was ultimately only another test which they succeeded without breaking a sweat.
- 5. "The First Phase Begins, Part 1"
Finally the newly created group arrive at the testing grounds but they are far from being alone, hundreds of people already await the arrival of the first judge and some individuals took it upon themselves to eliminate some of the small fries.
- 6. "The First Phase Begins, Part 2"
The first test is decided, it an endurance race. How long can the wannabes hunters last in this seamlessly never ending challenge? The pressure of the run doesn’t stop Gon to make a new friend that goes by the name of Killua.
While the exam continues we learn that Kurapika siblings have been killed for their eyes and for him, being a hunter mean that he could get within reach of all responsible. Leorio recall about his dead friend that he couldn’t save because he was lacking money. Gon talk about his dad and how he want to be just like him to Killua who doesn’t seems to have any reasons for taking the test, other than boredom.
The race reach his second stage when they need to pass into a foggy forest full of terrible man-eating monsters, but the biggest danger of all isn’t a resident of those wood but a participant in the test which bloodlust overcame his patience. Indeed, Hisoka has gotten pretty tired of playing good and he found in the fog the perfect opportunity to let his thirst for violence go wild without getting disqualified from the hunter test. More than a hundred of the participants are already eliminated, before the mad jester start to make slowly his way to the front eliminating everything in his path, and a lot more will have to quit with or without their lives still intact.
