The coming of Galactus....to the Ultimate universe.
Got lots of reviews to catch up on so they will all be a bit shorter.
I read Ultimate stuff in trade, but considering how “Important” this story is said to be, and it’s Galactus, and I’ve always been a big fan on Galactus, and I’m always interested to see how he gets involved in a story especially something like this.
Plot
Rick Jones returns back to Earth, and heads to a burger shop, but the Watcher calls him back out into space, and he is taken to a battle between the Kree and the Chiaturi.
Review
This was a really interesting issue, but it doesn’t really hit what I had hoped for in this issue which is lots of Galactus, but he doesn’t appear until later, and instead we have Rick Jones returning to Earth, and then being sent back out to space by the Ultimate version of the Watcher. It builds tension really well yes, but I just feel with the big promise put forward about this I expected more, but I like Joshua Hale Fialkov’s work in the past (I, Vampire) so I expected it to be good.
The Good
- · Adi Granov is the master of awesome looking covers this just looks incredible with high detail, and a dynamic shot of the World eater.
- · Rick Jones is a pretty sensible choice to focus on in this series, as he has been given power by the ultimate version of the Watcher, and my only previous experience with him in was Ultimate origins which is where he got his powers. I feel like he was a perfect choice for the book even though I have my reservations about the character (more on that later) I like how he was paired with the Watcher, as the Watcher’s actions add a lot of tension to the story with what he says, and he and Rick Jones’s interaction is quite funny.
- · The split dialogue between the Watcher, and Rick Jones is clever, and easy enough to follow.
- · The kree/Chitauri battle was a great backdrop for part of this issue, and the action was spectacular, also it adds more to the story as well as some suspense which Fialkov does use masterfully throughout the issue.
- · Gah Lak Tus which I always thought was an interesting concept even if some people don’t like it, and I have to say its entrance into the issue was pretty creepy as was the appearance of Galactus even though his appearance was more shocking rather than clever.
- · Incredibly beautiful double page spreads in this issue.
- · Time cracking is well placed in the issue with a lot of suspense built up to that moment, and it’s well worth just seeing it, as it flashes through the history of Rick Jones in both universes, and it looks amazing Leonard Kirk really let loose with that one.
- · The ending is just a classic what just happened kind of ending? It just was probably the most shocking ending you’ll see in a comic for a while.
- · Leonard Kirk’s art may not work for something’s, but it definitely works for this with its large scope, and double page spreads, it just looks amazing, and I didn’t think Kirk would do such a good job of it. Kirk also handles the emotion on characters faces particularly well, and Galactus looks big and impressive from the first time he appears in the book, and the twist that happens to him looks even more impressive.
The Bad
- · It should have had more Galactus with the big promise about what is happening in this series it feels like a bit of a let-down.
- · The first scene the art feels a little bit on the rushed side, but it doesn’t look as good as the space stuff.
- · The burger scene is irrelevant, I don’t know what purpose it served exactly.
- Rick Jones maybe a good choice to follow, but he's really annoying in this.
The verdict
This is a good start to the series with a lot of suspense in it, and action as well as some interesting developments with Galactus. This feels like something important compared to some events that feel like they will completely written off, and all affects removed a few months after (Fear Itself), so I’m pretty on board with this series, and what’s coming.
4 stars.
