"When's the last time...you went to church?"
This is a stand alone issue and personally one of my favorites. In this issue Peter Milligan uses Christopher Chance to explore the hypocrisies of "The Church" and religion in general. I was born a Roman Catholic and consider myself a hybrid of sorts, in which I personally adapted other religions to my on view of what is right. I can see this attack on "The Church" as a interesting take on the whole "Holy" Priest thing and the idea of forgiveness.
The Comic starts off in a shootout and Chance is the man people are shooting at, but Chance is being the "Human Target" and is in his make-up as Bruno's uncle, chef Carlos. Chance takes a job as a request from Carlos to protect the Priest. Chance finds out that this Priest has an interesting skeleton in his closet and that is why there is a petty thug out to kill him.
This comic was great, full of a lot of twists and turns. The best part was the ending and it is an ending you can only do in comics. We see the "petty" Thug get his "justice", but doesn't remember doing anything of the sorts. This only works in comics because the final pages have just enough information that it could be the truth or Chance playing dress up one last time for the issue. I also love the irony in the final pages.
Human Target is a must read in my honest opinion, an issues like this is very accessible, so if you see it loose in back-issue, give it a shot. If you read my other reviews, I hope you checked out the trades. I cannot recommend Human Target enough.
Cheers
