    After being bombarded with a massive dose of gamma radiation while saving a young man's life during an experimental bomb testing, Dr. Robert Bruce Banner was transformed into the Incredible Hulk: a green behemoth who is the living personification of rage and pure physical strength.

    The Incredible Hulk was created in 1962 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. While his original solo series didnt last very long, being canceled after only six issues, the Incredible Hulk would go on to become one of Marvel's most iconic characters. The following will be a guide to some the the Hulk's most important and most iconic stories.

    While it may not be remembered as an epic story, the original Incredible Hulk is still a great place to start for those who want to read the origin of the character. While in these early days the Hulk is a very different character, in these stories the ground work for who the character will evolve into will be set. This will feature the very first apperance of Bruce Banner, as well as his long time love intrest, Betty Ross. You will also meet the Hulk's long time antagonist; General "Thunderbolt" Ross. As he will always be; Banner will be a very conflicted indvidual who will strugle to control the beast within. As the Hulk will be a misunderstood creature who is hunted by the goverment and deemed a monster by those whom he loves. Written by Stan Lee with art by Jack Kirby.

    While he does not stay for long, the Hulk is a founding member of the Avenger's. He will leave after two issues and return as an antagonist in the third issue. Written by Stan Lee with art by Jack Kirby.

    Tales to Astonish

    Starting on Tales to Astonish #60, the Incredible Hulk becomes a feature on the book. This is where you will see the Hulk become the the modern version of the Hulk that you may of heard of through television and film. Here it will be discovered that anger is the key to the Hulk's transfermation. Many of the Hulks main antagonists will be introduced here, including the Abomination and the Leader. After Tales to Astonish reaches it's one hundredth issue, the Incredible Hulk will take over the book as a solo title. Many of the Hulk's portrayls in other media have been taken from this run, and it is renowned as one of Stan Lee's finest works as a writer.     The Incredible Hulk by Bill Mantlo

    Writer Bill Mantlo takes over the Incredible Hulk at issue 245 and goes on to have a character defining run on the book. He will dig into the character of Bruce Banner and get to the roots of his anger. Here you will also witness the Hulk's rivalry with General Thunderbolt Ross taken to their limits.

    Writer and artist John Byrne has a very short, yet very imortant run on the Incredible Hulk during the 80s. Here you will witness Bruce Banner's wedding to Betty Ross, making the Hulk one of the very first solo comic book characters to get married.

    Arguably the best Hulk writer, Peter David is definitly a must read for fans of the character. He evolves the Hulk as a character. Introducing the concepts of Bruce Banner having multiple personalities. You will witness Bruce Banner becomming "whole" for the first time. He gives the Hulk his best supporting cast, introducing characters like Marlo Chandelier, Mercy, and the Pantheion. His run will contantly have an overlapping plot, and it will consistently evolve during David's eleven years on the character. He will work with many artists throughout his run, including Todd McFarlane, Dale Kewon, Gary Frank, Darick Robertson, and Andy Kubert.
