    Bruce Banner suffers from multiple personality disorder and they surface as different Hulks

    the personalities are all Banner's personalities. He developed multiple personality disorder because he was beaten as a child. He then repressed all of those extra personalities as he grew up, until he he found an outlet in the form of the Hulk. 
     
    What changes them, I have no idea.

    His multiple personalities are a good idea to a point.  They give his character depth and potential.  They freed the Hulk from an endless string of child-like tantrums and simple "Hulk-smash!" storylines.  Unfortunately, too many personalitites (some even trite, cliche and/or stupid) have more of a negative effect than a positive one.
