A Fun Adventure That Isn't Watered Down For Kids

I got to see this movie in San Diego at Comic-Con.  I've already posted my thoughts and what Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost had to say when I sat down to talk with them.  You can read that here

Here is the official synopsis:

Whenever the forces of evil threatened mankind, Earth's mightiest heroes the Avengers were there to stop them — until they made the ultimate sacrifice in their final fight with the indestructible robot, Ultron.  But all was not lost for Tony Stark (Iron Man) kept the children of the Avengers safe and raised them to become the teenage heroes of tomorrow. Now James (Son of Captain America and Black Widow), Torunn (Daughter of Thor), Azari (Son of the Black Panther), and Pym (Son of Wasp and Giant Man) must finish the fight their parents started. Soon the arrow-slinging son of Hawkeye will join their ranks but it will take more than five teens to destroy the machine that defeated their parents. If these young heroes have any hope of winning they must find the missing Hulk and come together as… the Next Avengers!

The funny thing is, I've seen a lot of people bash this before they've even seen it.  Here's what I wrote after I first saw the movie back in July:

Thoughts after SDCC World Premiere

As I sort of alluded to in the beginning, I wasn't really too keen on this.  I did have some faith since Kyle and Yost's other movies have been done so well.  In the beginning it felt a little like "Avengers Lite."  The visuals, colors and character designs were all nice.  The home of the kids felt alive.  I liked the little touch like Cap's son being named James (after Bucky, obviously).  They did talk to each other like kids.  They feel they know everything when they most likely don't.

Is this strictly for kids?  Not really.  Some of the actions scenes surprised me.  They weren't near what I saw on Hulk Versus Wolverine the night before but the battle between Iron Man and Ultron was pretty brutal.  Ultron is portrayed as pretty menacing.  Just the glow of his mouth could give some children nightmares.

I have to say that I liked it.  It wasn't what I expected it to be.  It was more.  It was nice talking to the guys before seeing it.  What they said really makes sense.  You can see that this is a different movie but that's not a bad thing.

I liked it but what about the other Comic-conners?  There were very loud cheers and laughs.  More than I would've expected.  The screening was towards the end of the evening.  So it wasn't simply a room full of "kids" watching.  The brief Question and Answer at the end had several people stating that they would like more of these characters.   Craig has said that he could easily see this as the beginning of a series of movies of ongoing Saturday Morning cartoon.  What it comes down to (again) is viewer support.  The studio exec's need to know that it'd be financially meaningful.

One thing I wondered was if their story did continue, what would happen next?  The ending is set up so that they do still have loose ends to tie up.  As mentioned, the world was in a bad place.  I wasn't the only one with this thought.  Chris said that the other villains of the world are still out there.  They could've been in hiding all these years.  There's a "milion places to go" with the characters.

The DVD

When I received the DVD last week, I decided to watch it again just to make sure I wasn't caught up in the excitement at Comic-Con.  There's also the fact that I didn't mind watching it again.  It is a fun movie.  Yes there are kids in it but that's not a reason to dismiss it.  Think about what happened to their parents.  They were slaughtered by Ultron.  The kids go on an adventure but it gets to a point where it isn't so much fun.  Their lives are in danger.  The movie doesn't contain the same level of threat that you'd see on a Saturday Morning Cartoon.  The kids are written in a realistic way.  They talk to each other the way kids or siblings do.  They bicker and tease.  They also think they're invulnerable like a lot of today's youth seem to think.  They get a rude awakening and evolve because of it.

The character designs were well thought out.  The details in their looks, powers, environments and personalities were all well thought out.  It's simply a really good looking animated movie.  Ultron rocked as he and Iron Man battled each other.  "Old" Hulk was great.  I really did enjoy this movie. It did what it set out to do.  I had fun and was entertained.  I was pulled into this futuristic world and found myself caring about the characters.

Is this movie for everyone?  Probably not.  I know there will be some people out there that think they might be too "cool" to watch a movie about kid superheroes.   It'd be a shame to simply dismiss it because of that.  It may be about kids but it's not about rainbows and puppy dogs.  It's a movie that's worth seeing.

I give it a 4 out 5.  It's close to a 4.5.  The idea was to give new heroes to the next generation of Marvel fans.  I am still part of the older set.  Obviously I would've liked to see more "familiar" characters but for new characters, they were good.  They had their parents' traits yet still had their own personalities.

Special Features

  • Legacy - The Making of Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow  -  A making of feature.  You get to see sketches of the character designs.  It's also cool to hear Craig Kyle, Chris Yost, (Supervising Director/Producer) Gary Hartle and (Exec. Producer) Eric S. Rullman talk about creating this movie.  You can see that they did put some effort into making this.  As Chris Yost says, if you're looking for a "fun good hearted adventure with some heroic kids then this one's for you."
  • Kid Power: Next-Gen Marvel  -  A feature on the current crop of 'kids' in comics such as Yost and Kyle's New X-Men, Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius, Power Pack and Mini Marvels.  Chris Yost puts it well when he says writing the kids is like writing Spider-Man at the beginning of his career, as a fifteen year old.  The point is also made that it is important to have comics geared towards kids.  We have to ensure that the comic medium doesn't die out.
  • First Look: Hulk Vs Wolverine  -  A four minute feature on the film.  You also get to see a little of Deadpool in action.  Craig Kyle mentions that they brought him in because he hadn't been done before and his appearance here isn't suitable for Saturday Morning Cartoons.
  • First Look: Hulk Vs Thor  -  Another four minute feature on the grand tale of Hulk invading Asgard.

This post relates to: Michael Turner, Hulk

Marvel is proud to unveil the all-new variant covers to Hulk #6 and Hulk #7, in memory of beloved superstar artist Michael Turner.

Hulk #6 (Michael Turner Variant)

These are really cool looking.  I do have to say that I've never seen the Hulk (either of them) look so pretty.  The thing that really bothers me about this is that the average reader or fan will not be able to get these covers without paying a fortune.  If you look at the information, issue 6 has a 50/50 variant both by Ed McGuinness.  Issue 7 has a 50/50 variant by Art Adams and Frank Cho.  So one has to assume that these Michael Turner variants will be the dealer incentive versions for ordering "X" amount of copies.  Yes dealers should get their own rewards for providing us a place to get comics week after week but what it comes down to is people are going to be trying to cash in on Michael Turner.  Marvel gets more money if more copies are ordered and the shops get more from selling them.  I know it's all about supply and demand and I don't have to personally pay for one.  It just seems wrong that the average Michael Turner fan won't be able to easily get a copy.

That's my rant.  I'm just still bummed he passed away.

“Living in a world without Mike is something I could never imagine,” said Hulk scribe Jeph Loeb. “He was the greatest guy. The. Greatest.  I wanted some way to share my love of his artwork and at the same time give something to the fans -- who were more important to Mike than anyone can imagine -- and spoke to Marvel about doing these covers.  They are pieces Mike did of the Green Hulk (one as a gift to Frank Mastromauro)and Peter Steigerwald of Aspen Comics did the recoloring and remastering.  It was terribly important to me that Peter and Aspen got to be part of this as well.  They are a celebration of Mike's enormous talent and in turn, his life.  Enjoy.”

“Michael represented the best of us both professionally and personally. He was a true superstar,” said Dan Buckley, Marvel President & Publisher.

Retailers, please check the Marvel Mailer for special ordering instructions on Michael Turner’s variants to Hulk #6 and Hulk #7.

Hulk #5 (Second Print Variant)

Red Hulk Wages War With Thor To A Second Printing!

I may have questioned a couple things in this issue but I am still enjoying the series.  Like everyone else, I want to know who is this Red Hulk.  He has shown not only incredible brute strength but also a brilliant mind.  He's been able to take down everyone that's stood against him.  With the last page, issue 6 looks to be really interesting.  Perhaps it will mark the end of his smashing.  Maybe we'll find out who he really is.

Don't worry, Red Hulk will continue to have a presence in this series.  Jeph Loeb said that the issues would be split with both Red and Green Hulk having their own stories.

So is it better not knowing who he is?  Will knowing take the mystery out of him and make him less interesting?  That's hard to say.  If continued to be well-written, it'd just be an opportunity to flesh out the character.

It’s the comic book phenomenon that has everyone talking and that has sold out again! Marvel is pleased to announce that Hulk #5, from the white-hot creative team of Eisner-winner, Emmy-nominated scribe Jeph Loeb (Ultimates 3, upcoming Ultimatum) and superstar artist Ed McGuinness, will return with Hulk #5 Second Printing Variant! With a new cover featuring the powerful interior art of McGuinness, and a story that pits Red Hulk against the mighty Thor, no Marvel fan can afford to miss this shocking battle! And just what happened to green Hulk and A-Bomb?

"Five issues.  Five sold out.  And the second printings too!” said Loeb. “I'll have to tell McGuinness' kids to stop buying so many copies!  Seriously though, I gotta thank Warren Simons and the entire Thor crew who were so helpful at getting the God of Thunder to guest star in this issue.  And rest assured, Thor vs. Red Hulk -- the Grudge Match isn't far behind.  All of this builds to next issue when Ol' Greenskin and the Rulk finally have it out -- and I can promise you, only one of them walks away!”

With the buzz around Hulk growing with each issue—leading to sell outs of all the series’ printings—Marvel urges retailers to check their orders on Hulk. Timothy Callahan of ComicBookResources.Com gushes, “This comic is pretty much all I ever need from a Hulk series, and as long as each issue is this much fun, I'll be sticking around for a long time.”

After this issue’s stunning last page, just what lies ahead for Red Hulk? There’s only one way to find out—read the smash hit Hulk!

This post relates to: San Diego Comic-Con, Wolverine, Hulk, Craig Kyle, Chris Yost

A few words with Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost plus a viewing

I got the chance to sit down with co-writer Christopher Yost, co-writer/producer Craig Kyle and producer Frank Paur before getting a viewing of the upcoming feature.

Craig Kyle teased that there will be "surprises to awake the fans."  It has a 70s feel but it's also been updated.  Kyle said that they looked beyond Hulk 181.  They looked at all their battles and this became a sort of "best of."  He is happy with the art direction that Jeff Matsuda came up with.  Craig describes it as "Jeff on steroids."  He also describes Hulk Vs Wolverine as "darker and more fun."  It's not for kids.  It's not a Saturday Morning cartoon.

Wolverine is not the only character Hulk will be taking on (some more on this in a bit).  The dvd (that will be out in January 2009) will feature two "Hulk Vs..."  The second will be Hulk Vs Thor.  The battle with Wolverine lasts 33 minutes and Thor's will be 45.

Will the Hulk be a hero or monster in this battle?  He will be portrayed differently in the two fights.  Craig and Chris are both huge fans of Wolverine.  There will be more to this fight than just the two "hanging out."  There's some big secrets in this that I suppose I will have to reveal as they're bound to make it to the internet eventually.  Again, I'll get to that later.

I asked Craig if this will be the same "Wolverine" that will be in his "Wolverine and the X-Men" cartoon coming soon.  He said yes.  There will actually be a rematch in episode 7.  Only it won't be as violent as seen here.  With Saturday Morning cartoons, Craig said you're kind of chained down with what you can do.  He would love to do more "Versus" dvds with solo characters and teams (like X-Men Vs the Fantastic Four).

When asked if there's a clear-cut winner, Craig was coy.  The winners are the fans.  Chris threw in that there are definitely losers.   There will also be a scene after the credits you'll want to check out (we were not privey to that during the screening).

I asked them where the idea came up for this.  Why Hulk Vs Wolverine?  So far they've done the Ultimates 1 and 2, Iron Man and Doctor Strange.  The next release will be NEXT AVENGERS (I'll have more on that after tomorrow).  With this, things just came together.  As Craig said before, they're big fanboys and this is what they wanted to do.

Craig pointed out that this is geared towards the older fans.  It's pure entertainment.  If people enjoy it, they need to support it.  That will ensure future dvds.  He made a good point about the recent Batman manga dvd.  I'm sure some won't see it this way but he has a point.  He rushed out to get it himself the day it came out.  He was bothered by the fact that parts of it were up on youtube that same day.  People need to understand that if the studios don't make money, we won't see more movies.  He wants to do the stories that fans actually want to see.

It's also been announced that a PLANET HULK dvd will be coming out.  Craig said he would love to do something like Civil War or Secret Invasion but doesn't feel that one dvd would do it justice.  Chris said what he likes about the dvds is that there is a single story and an ending.  They will be approaching Planet Hulk from a fan's point of view.

I'll post more on their upcoming projects when after I view NEXT AVENGERS.

The Viewing...

SPOILERS AHEAD

"Hulk Smash!"
The movie was shown in a big hall.  I'd like to say a big Thank You to the Lionsgate rep that made sure "press" got reserved seating for this.  Watching it a big screen with a full sound system simply rocked.  Craig was right, Jeff Matsuda's character development worked.  The animation was smooth and when you first see Wolverine...it's dead on.  Even his voice (by Steve Bloom).
Hulk is a monster here.  He destroys a town.  When Wolverine is sent after him by Department H, Craig and Chris were right, it is violent.  Blood and brutal beat-downs.  The Hulk just wailed on Wolverine's head.  (Frank Tatasciore once again captures the Hulk's essence in his performance).

Now here is the big spoiler.  Read it at your own risk.  Resist if you can.

Wolverine offers to scratch that hard to reach itch
The movie isn't just about Hulk and Wolverine.  There are others involved.  We see some flashbacks to Wolverine's Weapon X days including some of his old sparring partners.  The biggest surprise and joy of the movie?  None other than Deadpool himself.   The other characters are well done as well.  Deadpool is the big surprise so I won't bother mentioning the others.  It's not too hard to figure out if you think about it.  There was also a nice tiny little cameo that will hopefully lead to something.

This movie will be the opposite of the Hulk Vs Thor movie.  That will be on a grander scale set with Asgard and the Gods.  Craig said, "Wait until you see the Enchantress...wow!"

Could there be a Deadpool movie in the future?  Craig says if the fans ask and support it.  They see each movie as the possible beginning of a franchise.  Could there be another Dr. Strange?  It's possible.  Craig would like to see a New Mutants movie.

As mentioned.  This deserves to be supported.  This is the fight we all want to see.  This is definitely a top quality production.  Even though I've seen this fight (I'm not as interested in Hulk Vs Thor but I am curious now) I will be buying this in January.  Probably on Blu-ray.  You won't be disappointed.

Here's the trailer once again:

In theatres Friday June 13!

I just read a review at Variety.com.  I'll be going to see it tonight at midnight.  This review makes me feel a little better.

What seemed, in theory, the least-necessary revival of a bigscreen superhero emerges as perfectly solid summer action fare in “The Incredible Hulk.” Revisiting the character Ang Lee and James Schamus  put under a psychological microscope in 2003 to mixed results, Marvel, Universal and several of the same producers have repackaged one of their better-known stable stars in a straightforward actioner that delivers the goods with no unnecessary frills or digressions. Happy to give the intended audience what it wants, this loud and quick-moving production will shake loose ample coin in all markets.

To anyone wondering why the Marvel team would so soon embark on a makeover of the growly green giant after all the angst endured on the previous one, the answer is provided by the final scene, in which the star of the most recent Marvel B.O. smash unexpectedly turns up to ask, “What if I told you we were getting a team together?”

New film thus marks the first step in the label’s plan to begin shuffling its major characters into films together, a la some of the comicbooks -- a scheme that seemingly required the rehabilitation of the Hulk from something that came to be regarded as perhaps too rarefied, not of a piece with the studio’s other cinematic stalwarts.

Viewed in this utilitarian light, the new film gets its job done. It’s not especially exciting or surprising, lacking the cheek and sheen of “Iron Man” and the opulence and star power of the “Spider-Man” and “X-Men” series. But it’s better than the “Fantastic Four” pictures and “Daredevil” and manages to shift the title character from a hopelessly conflicted Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to a wannabe good guy.

Are those dollar signs in your eyes?
