House of M is a comic book story arc that first appeared in House of M #1
Reality is flipped upside down by the Scarlet Witch when mutants are the majority.
Following the destruction of the Avengers, a group of super-heroes came together to decide what to do about the Scarlet Witch. Over the years, her mental instability and subsequent lack of control over the immense reality-manipulating power she wields have put herself, those closest to her, and the general public in imminent danger. Together the X-Men, as well as Avengers, new and old, decide that she is too dangerous to live, and that something must be done before reality itself is undone by her madness. Of all those heroes involved only Quicksilver seeks to preserve his sister. Magneto is absent because when he heard of his daughter's breakdown he rescued her and remains reclusive on the island nation of Genosha while she recuperates.
As the heroes make their way to where Wanda is being held, Quicksilver rushes to his sister's side. Awakening her, he tells her of the plot to kill her and that she needs to use her powers to save them. Suddenly, a white flash over-takes the world, and reality is flipped upside down. The Scarlet Witch has remade reality in the views of Mutant superiority over humans formerly held by her father. In this new, alternate reality mutants are the majority, with normal Homo sapiens in the minority. Sapiens (sapes, as the slur goes) are now also second class citizens, suffering the ridicule, indignity, and the same constant fear of persecution that mutants had to endure for so long. Mutants now hold positions of authority in business, as well as the highest offices in the world's military and governmental bodies.
Of the world's population only two remember life before House of M. Wolverine's mind rejected this new reality from the begining. He knew of his life in this new reality, but he also knew it was fabricated. The other person in this reality who initially understood that the accepted truth was fake was the child Layla Miller. Layla has the fortuitous ability of being able to re-activate people's memories of their past life, as well as their lives in the new House of M reality, granting them the ability to understand that the world they now belong to is fake.
Before long, Layla had assembled a group who were going to assault Magneto (the beloved global dictator in the House of M reality). Not long after assault began Magneto's memory had been restored.
He is both shocked and angered at what had happened, and, immediately, realized that the Scarlet Witch had been coerced by Quicksilver to re-form reality to one which she, and her family, could live seemingly perfect lives.
Angry at Magneto, for, again, choosing mutants over their family, the Scarlet Witch spoke her now famous words, "No more mutants", which caused the M-Day, in which 90% of the world's mutants lost their powers, and reality was reverted to it's original state.

When orders come down that a leader of the human resistance in Japan must be assassinated, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s highly trained Hellions squad is called in to do it. But when a team of future mutant leaders called the New Mutants find out about this, they must intervene to put an end to a guaranteed disaster of global portions!
The more things change, the more they stay the same. In the altered reality of the HOUSE OF M, the New Mutants and Hellions are still rivals! The New Mutant Leadership Institute trains the leaders and diplomats of the future while the Hellions are SHIELD’s elite training squad. When terrorists from Japan attack the Leadership Institute the Hellions must save their rivals from certain death. But not all the Hellions and New Mutants share the animosity of their peers. David Alleyne and Noriko Ashida are secretly in love. When the Hellions are assigned to track the terrorists back to Japan, Noriko is bumped from the mission when it is revealed that her sapien father is the leader of the terrorists they are hunting down. Desperate to save her father from certain death, Surge asks for help from David and his friends at the Leadership Institute. David agrees to help his girlfriend, but his friends refuse to tag along. David’s classmate and friend, Laurie Garrison reports all this to her father, Dr. Sean Garrison. He urges Laurie to go along with David. Laurie’s classmate, Quentin Quire telepathically learns of her and her father’s plans. In order to protect their secret agenda as SHIELD agents, Laurie uses her pheromones to force Quentin into a suicidal depression and the powerful telepath mentally kills himself!

Rumors of the horrors and atrocities taking place in Emperor Sunfire’s Japan force the New Mutants to go against their orders and protect the Human Rebellion. However, a traitor in their midst might make this mission a failure before it can even begin! Part 2 (of 4).
As the SHIELD squad called the Hellions track down the human terrorists in Japan looking for some answers regarding their attack on the New Mutant Leadership Institute, Noriko Ashida AKA Surge learns some hard truths about the lengths that SHIELD will go to maintain Magneto’s grip on the world. She witnesses the torture of Cameron Hodge by SHIELD agents, Wither and Josh Foley. She steps in and stops them but Hodge insists that she escape and try to help her father with the knowledge he passes along to her. He begs her to kill him rather than leave him as SHIELD’s captive. Surge reluctantly agrees to Hodge’s demands, unaware that her every move is being trailed by SHIELD. She goes to the New Mutant Leadership Institute and recruits help from Prodigy, Wallflower and Mercury. Sophie, Jubilee and Dust insist on tagging along as well. The small band of mutants head to Japan and surrender themselves to the human terrorists. Meanwhile, SHIELD investigates Project Genesis and find themselves at odds with Emperor Sunfire who insists the project is of little importance. He also reveals that he considers Surge his own child since it was he who removed her from her sapien parents and insured her bright future.

After a brief tussle, the New Mutants convince the Japanese terrorists that they are genuine in their desire to help shut down Project: Genesis. Unbeknownst to them, Laurie Garrison is a deep cover SHIELD agent. She calls in the terrorists’ location and the Hellions arrive to arrest them.
