Hope Summers
Character » Hope Summers appears in 1423 issues.
The first mutant born after M-Day, Hope Summers is believed to either be the mutant messiah or the harbinger of death for humanity. She is an Omega-level mutant power manipulator and possesses a connection to the Phoenix Force.
um what is soooooooooooooooo important
Spoilers for everything from Messiah Complex through Second Coming
Hope was the first mutant birth since M-day. This alone is significant. Detecting her birth fried Cerebra - also significant. She was hunted down by more than one group who had access to prophesies/knowledge of the future. This included various anti-mutant groups, as well as the Marauders and the Acolytes, who took their cues from Mr. Sinister.
Bishop, on the other hand, thought Hope was the mutant destined to cause the internment of mutants in the future he was born in. Bastion thought likewise, and was revealed to be the brains behind the anti-mutant groups. His mission was to kill Hope, and finish mutantkind off once and for all. Meanwhile, Cable had some knowledge we have not been made privy to, which led him to think Hope was the messiah of mutantkind. Cable got to her first.
He raised her in the future, on the run from Bishop. Cable taught her to be like himself - a soldier, and a mutant of incalculable power who may prove to be a messianic figure. Hope expressed many reservations about her own role, but Cable's faith in her seems to have been warranted.
Cyclops is hinging the hopes and dreams of all mutantkind on Hope, who may have the ability to restore mutants who were de-powered during the Decimation, or even the ability to facilitate more new mutant births/the re-emergence of new mutants at puberty. We don't yet know what exactly she is capable of, but her role in the X-books really starts now. She managed to defeat Bastion by force, which was no small feat. She also broke a barrier that Thor was unable to. What Hope does from here on out is the interesting bit, IMO. She displayed an ability not unlike Mimic's in X-Force #28, with the difference being that the powers were highly amplified, rather than halved, as they are in Mimic's case (she also manifested a visible energy signature not unlike the Phoenix raptor). Whether this ability to duplicate other mutants' powers is a direct result of Hope's own mutant power, or due in part to her contact with Rogue as a child remains to be seen. As I said before, Hope's active role in events really starts now.
