Van Hohenheim is Edward and Alphonse Elric's father, who bears nearly the exact same appearance as the Leader of the Homunculi, Father. He is quiet and intelligent, and thus far we have little idea of the extent of his knowledge, other then the fact that he himself is a Philosopher's Stone.
