First Incarnation

The H.I.V.E. was formed by the H.I.V.E. Master – who gathered together seven other criminal scientists. The H.I.V.E. would try to gain world domination through terrorism and political manipulation, as well as eliminating their common foes, such as Superman and the Teen Titans.

While in Asia, the H.I.V.E. Master discovered an alien being and used its knowledge to make the H.I.V.E. into a truly powerful force of evil. The same alien also fathered two children known as Thunder and Lightning.

Later, the H.I.V.E. sought to destroy the Teen Titans, who they perceived as a potential threat. The H.I.V.E. recruited a bitter young man, Grant Wilson, and granted him powers. Wilson became the Ravager and tried to kill the Titans. However, Ravager died in battle and the contract he signed to destroy the Titans was taken over by his father, Slade Wilson (Deathstroke, the Terminator). Deathstroke used a psychotic young girl named Tara Markov (the costumed adventurer known as Terra) to infiltrate the Titans and betray them. With Terra's help, Deathstroke was able to kidnap the Titans and deliver them to the H.I.V.E. 's headquarters. The Titans eventually escaped and Deathstroke was brought into custody.

The Titans' next battle with the H.I.V.E. took place in their undersea headquarters. Here, it was revealed the H.I.V.E. was now being led by a mysterious H.I.V.E. Mistress, who had apparently slain her husband, the former H.I.V.E. Master. The Titans escaped the undersea headquarters just before it exploded. But not before the insane H.I.V.E. Mistress killed the seven scientists and herself as well. This seemed to mark the end of the H.I.V.E.

However, vestiges of the H.I.V.E. remained. Some of the same scientists formerly involved with the H.I.V.E. became members of the Wildebeest Society (see Wildebeest Society).

The H.I.V.E. was later resurrected under the auspices of a new H.I.V.E. Mistress

Second Incarnation

The original H.I.V.E. was formed by the H.I.V.E. Master – who gathered together seven other criminal scientists. The H.I.V.E. would try to gain world domination through terrorism and political manipulation, as well as eliminating their common foes, such as Superman and the Teen Titans. The Titans eventually defeated the criminal organization.

Years later, an all-new H.I.V.E. surfaced. Led by a mysterious new H.I.V.E. Mistress, this new incarnation recruited nihilistic young men and women for their 'cause' and attacked the Titans. These foot soldiers were promised immortality for their allegiance. A mysterious young man named Damien Darhk was the second-in-charge next to the H.I.V.E. Mistress. The all-new H.I.V.E.'s mission was a simple one: rid the world of all super-powered meta-humans.

Addeline Cane

The H.I.V.E. Mistress was revealed to be Adeline Kane, Deathstroke's ex-wife; she blamed super-heroes for the deaths of her two sons, Grant (Ravager) Wilson and Joey (Jericho) Wilson. Kane lured the Titans and other heroes to Zandia with the intention of detonating a thermo-nuclear bomb to destroy as many heroes as possible in one fell swoop.

Meanwhile, the anti-Titans group known as Tartarus was tracking Adeline Kane for their own purposes; Tartarus leader Vandal Savage sought to harvest Addie's immortal blood to create an immortality serum. The Titans – with the help of Deathstroke – tracked Tartarus to Zandia and found themselves in a dangerous three-way battle for their lives.

Savage slit Addie's throat in an attempt to synthesize her blood - and offered Cyborg a human body if he would help Savage harvest the blood into a serum. Addie, although immortal, was brain dead. Cyborg agonized whether to accept Savage's offer. But before a decision was reached, Starfire fired a starbolt at Addie, killing her instantly. Starfire rationalized that she was virtually dead and in great pain, not to mention distracting half the team; Killing her, she reasoned, was the only compassionate option.

During the melee, both sides suffered casualties. The third Red Panzer was killed - only to be replaced by the nihilistic H.I.V.E. soldier, Justin. Vandal Savage shot Cheshire as a means of distraction, leaving her injured in enemy hands. Damien Darhk's treachery prompted Lady Vic to plunge a sword through his back, seemingly killing him. But Darhk's blood mingled with Adeline Kane's before she died, leaving Darhk's himself immortal.

The H.I.V.E. was contained, the bomb was deactivated and Tartarus escaped, as Slade was left to mourn his ex-wife.

Queen Bee

The remnants of the criminal H.I.V.E. organization survived this encounter, however. Eventually, Queen Bee - former Injustice Gang member and ruler of the planet Korll - assumed the role of H.I.V.E. Mistress. With the alien Queen Bee's hypno-pollen, she can bend others to her will and create shock troop drones with ease.
