Heroes for Hire #1: Fourth time's the charm!
Seems like almost every decade Marvel has tried to recapture the fun that the original Heroes for Hire had going for it back in 1978. Volume 2 had Iron Fist basically assembling the Defenders. Fail. Volume 3 had Misty Knight & the girls lead a team that resembled Birds of Prey. Fail. Times have changed and street characters patrolling the seediness of NYC doesn't carry the same impact as it does today. You're more likely to run into a pretentious Midwest transplant jacking up the rent in your building to $2100 for a studio vs. a street thug.
By defining each street character's jurisdiction, writing team DnA has discovered a way to make all of Marvel's vigilantes work within their limitations without stepping on each other's toes. For instance, Falcon & Black Widow are infiltrate/recon, followed by MoonKnight who can cause a lot more damage financially, and Elecktra who delivers a ruthless coupe de grace and kills the head of the snake. This way, none of the characters' modus operandi would be compromised.
Of course, there's a brilliant set up. Competition is sure to follow as Silver Sable's crew can't be too happy. I still have no clue how Ghost Rider and the Punisher fit into the equation. For now, I can enjoy Brad Walker's sticks. I love the way he drew Misty Knight's lips on the microphone almost in a tribute to the Warriors movie.
The final page of the book is a total shocker and you'd be hard pressed to find a more entertaining way to end a first issue.
