Hellion

Hellion is a comic book character that first appeared in New Mutants #2

Hellion was one of the students at the Xavier Institute and one of the New X-Men in training until the school was closed.

Julian Keller's telekinetic powers developed during puberty. At first his parents did not try to get rid of him, but they did advise that he keep his powers hidden. He didn't, and his parents sent him to the Xavier Institute.

When he joined, he was under the care of Northstar, but he was constantly getting into trouble and so was handed off to Emma Frost. Emma Frost saw a lot of potential in him, and made him the leader of the her training squad. Julian was allowed to select his own codename and decided upon "Hellion" in order to honor Emma and the students who went before him under her training. He was made the leader of the Hellions, (becoming much to Rockslide's chagrin "Hellion and the Hellions"), which only served to feed his ego. His powers developed quickly while he was at the school and he soon learned that he could fly, create concussive blasts and defensive shields. He had a knack for getting into trouble, and often found himself (and his team) conflicting with the New Mutants, specifically Prodigy.

Julian was often seen as a Magneto-like figure at the school. His elitist aura and need for superiority often shined through, especially during an impassioned speech he gave to the entire student body defending fellow student Wither, who was under investigation by the FBI.

True to his name, Hellion repeatedly stuck his nose where it didn't belong, causing problems everywhere he went. He even tried to rescue Wither from the FBI, but the New Mutants intervened. Hellion developed a crush on Sofia Mantega (codenamed Wind Dancer and now known as Renascence), a leader of the opposing team, and the two had quite an effect on each other. Julian even convinced Sofia to participate in the aforementioned run in with the FBI while Sofia in turn forced Julian to let his guard down and show a more vulnerable side to his macho personality.

Julian often aggressively pursued Sofia which she often smugly rejected due to his mistreatment towards her teammates. Following the death of Julian's former mentor Northstar, Julian began to open up to Sofia and their relationship began to blossom from there.

When time came for the year-end dance, Sofia decided to attend the formal with her friend Laurie instead of going with Julian. In an attempt to make her jealous, Julian then brought all three Cuckoos as his date. Julian's teammate Wither then encouraged him to dance with the girl he really came to see instead of indirectly trying to get at her and the couple did indeed have the last dance. With rival team drama behind them, Julian then supported Sofia in her attempts to mend her crumbling squad, telling her that she "always [saw] the best in people", including himself. The two shared their first kiss and cemented their relationship.

The Kingmaker

At the end of a school semester, Julian invited his squad to his parents' house for the summer. Getting a mutant made of rock and another mutant made of metal onto the plane was difficult, and Hellion started a fight with the airport security. He called his family lawyer, who contacted the Director of Homeland Security, who contacted the head of airport security and Mercury and Rockslide were then able to get on the plane. However, his parents were so embarrassed by the racket he had caused, pulling their name into the conflict, they disowned him. Julian was extremely angry, and broke into their safe to steal some of their fortune. Once he broke into their safe, he found some documents regarding "Kingmaker", a mysterious man with the power, it seemed, to fulfill the wishes of anyone who summoned him.

After some discussion, the Hellions summoned the Kingmaker. He would grant them each one wish if they would promise to do him a favor in the future. Julian wished for fame and glory, and in return, the Hellions brought him a bio weapon. Hellion, after seeing some of the bad things that Kingmaker could do, would only agree to hand it over if Kingmaker would void their contracts. Kingmaker agreed, but the Hellions still attacked him, turning the weapon over to SHIELD after they got it back from him.

M-Day

Childhood's End

Following M-Day, Emma redid the teams with the mutants that still had their powers. Hellion was one of these mutants and so he was made a member of the New X-Men training squad. However much to Julian's (and Nori's) dismay, Emma named Surge the leader of the New X-Men (because Julian refused to take down X-23).

After Julian made an off-handed remark about his rival Prodigy, a depowered mutant, no longer belonging at the Institute, Sofia overheard the conversation and confronted Julian. As all depowered mutants were forced out of the Institute, a deeply hurt Sofia left the school without notifying Julian, causing him intense anger and sadness. Julian have tried to apologize to her, though, Sofia did not gave her a second chance. In a Danger Cave exercise, Julian became very harsh to X-23 and Elixir because of his insults. Following some events, Sofia also have to leave the Institute for being depowered.

During Stryker's bus attack, Tag, Julian's best friend, was killed. Tag's death resulted in a personality change for Julian, deeply disturbing him and causing him to shed his ego. Julian also had to work with Prodigy, a mutant that had been one of his worst enemies. Prodigy had lost his powers but was still at the school and (unofficially) part of the team.

Nimrod

When Nimrod showed up and tried to get Forge to rebuild its body, Hellion and the team (lead by Surge, another of Hellion's former enemies) went to stop it. During the fight Rockslide was utterly destroyed. When the battle with Nimrod was over, Hellion used his telekinetic powers to put Rockslide back together, giving him his new and current look. X-23 had also been injured during the fight and was not able to heal herself. She was quickly dying and the group wasn't able to save her. Hellion picked her up and tried to fly her to the mansion before she died, but he couldn't go fast enough. Emma Frost was talking to him telepathically and he begged her to help. She didn't want to and said it was impossible, but Hellion kept begging. He had lost a teammate when William Stryker killed Tag (and a busload of other students) and he couldn't bear to lose Laura. Emma relented and removed the blocks that prevented Hellion from using his powers to their full extent. Using his now stronger telekinesis to travel at incredible speeds, Hellion was then able to reach the mansion in time. Unfortunately, the unleashing of his powers weakened his body and he collapsed right as he made it to the medical center at the Institute. Before he did, he forced a previously-catatonic Elixir to wake up and heal X-23.

Mercury Falling

Julian woke up some time later and was in perfect physical condition. However he seems to be having problems with his powers. A series of incidents, including throwing Santo threw a wall and his bed out of a window; he ends up in training sessions with Beast. The X-Men’s resident scientist believes that his powers have now settled at a higher level than before and because of it he is having problems with the fine motor controls. His theory is proven true when Julian attempts to make a paperclip he has telekinetically lifted move, he destroys the danger room floor. Their session ends just as Elixir comes seeking Beast, giving Julian the

chance to go shower. Some time later he walks in on Santo and the others watching the Young Avengers. He asks them where Mercury was and after being told they don’t know, he goes seeking them. He walks in on Laura just as she is preparing to go after the recently abducted Mercury. He insists on tagging along, flying both of them out of the mansion when she disagrees. They begin shaking down Laura’s old contacts to find where Mercury is being held. During the course of their search the two come into conflict over Laura’s willingness to kill. In the end they manage to gain her location from the Owl. Upon arriving at the Hand’s lair the duo waste no time dispatching the guards, until Kimura arrives. She uses sonics to disable Julian and begins to attack Laura, Julian manages to concentrate despite the sonics and blast Kimura, refusing to kill her, he instead hurls her (effortlessly) 27.3 miles away. The two then go on to rescue Mercury, and though they have problems with the Predators, they manage to last until the rest of the X-Men arrive to retrieve them.

The next adventure the Institute students faced was being transported to Limbo by Belasco. While the majority of the students are transported, Hellion and Surge manage to avoid capture because they are busy arguing about his recent mission with X-23. Trance uses her powers to contact those back at the mansion, reaching Surge and Hellion and telling them of the other students capture and naming Belasco. Hellion and Surge then go to the O*NE. They then learn that Amanda Sefton is in a coma in Germany, Surge insists they be there when she wakes up. Hellion and Surge travel to Germany where they speak to the former ruler of Limbo, explaining their situation and being informed by her of Belasco’s return. They insist on being transported to limbo, and Amanda wearily accepts. Accompanied by a single Sentinel pilot, Hellion and Surge find themselves transported to Limbo where they’re greeted by thousands, if not millions of demons. They manage to hold their own against the horde, and with the sentinel pilot holding them off, to work their way to Belasco’s citadel. They arrive just as Illyana comes to her senses and sends the X-Men home.

World War Hulk

When Hulk attacks the manner, Hellion and the other New X-Men are the first to respond. Hellion manages to pin hulk down for a moment in their first attack but is then knocked away. When he tries again to attack him he is the first to be defeated. Realizing he is a telekinetic Hulk creates a sonic boom, rupturing his eardrums. He is down for the rest of the fight.

Messiah Complex

During the time leading up the birth of the new mutant Sinister sent Exodus and his team to the Mansion to attempt to retrieve the books of destiny. The only ones present were the students and Kitty and Colossus, when they fail to locate the books they attack the students. Hellion and the others manage to give a good accord of themselves until Exodus and the others pull out. After this incident things around the mansion were slightly quieter. Julian continues practicing with his powers, though he admits to Cecily that he cannot deal with anything smaller than a refrigerator, after being caught blowing a wall out of the mansion. When Cessily involves Julian in the students search for the youngest mutant he is able to help provide his age, as well as those of the Cuckoo’s. Just as Julian is explaining that nobody is going to snipe Mr. Fantastic’s kid, Emma Frost comes to collect him and Cessily for student Interviews. While meeting with Emma, Julian accuses her of abandoning him and his fellow former Hellion’s. Citing her “Bizarre trust speech”, and they way she’s avoided them since the Purifier attack he turns his back on her, leaving the office. When the students convene to calculate the youngest mutant on the planet things become complicated. Nori kisses Julian in front of everyone, including her boyfriend David. Hellion flies out of the mansion. Sooraya approaches Julian to talk about what happened. He confides in her how lost he feels; his best friend is dead, the girl he thought he loved has left, his mentor is flipping out, and he can’t stop thinking about a girl he is literally scared of. Though he is grateful to her for coming to check on him. Julian then goes to look for Nori, and walks in on her and David fighting. Not knowing what’s going on he blasts David, and is given a taste of his new found skills for his trouble. He tells David he didn’t kiss her, and he responds that he knows and to see
Elixir for his injuries. He and David still appear to be fine after this, and he and the Students settle in for the X-Men’s new training schedule.
When the first new mutant is born since M-Day Hellion and the rest of the Institute’s students want to be involved in the action. When Cyclops kept them out of the action, the students confront him. While he was content to stand on the sidelines while Rockslide and the others confronted it didn’t stay that way. When Cyclops stated they could leave anytime if they didn’t like his orders, Hellion called him on it. Cyclops response was simple, while he would allow them to leave, he would also drag them back, “They also serve who stand and wait”. Cyclops left believing the matter closed after that, but it wasn’t. When Surge discovered that the purifiers were involved, she took the information to the rest of the team. Hellion was one of the students who elected to go after them, citing Brian’s death. Along with the rest of the New X-Men he tracks down the Purifiers to DC.

They begin an assault on their headquarters, easily infiltrating it. They begin a drawn out battle with their forces creating a distraction to allow Anole to find information on the child. During the conflict Hellion tries to reach out to Surge, stopping her from unnecessarily killing a man and saving her from an attack. Hellion confronts the new leader of the Purifiers who is also the man who killed his friends. It’s then that Lady Deathstrike makes her appearance, spearing Hellion through the chest. X-23 protected him until Pixie managed to teleport the team out. (She later avenged him, seemingly killing Lady Deathstrike for harming him) He was taken back to what was left of the Manor. Prodigy and Beast managed to stabilize him, and he spent the remainder of his time on life support.

Divided We Stand

Julian ponders his future..
Julian ponders his future..
When Julian awakens he finds that things have changed drastically, as Emma Frost soon explains to him. Following the events of Messiah Complex, Scott has disbanded the X-Men. He confronts Emma about this, but she puts him to sleep, and when he awakens she is gone. He discovers that all of his expenses are being paid for by Warren Worthington III (the X-Man known as Angel). He also finds that Scott already approached his parents, but they left town instead of taking him back. Feeling disenfranchised he decides to seek revenge. Using his resources he successfully tracks down the X-Men's worst enemy, Magneto.

While having dinner, Julian proposes that he work with Magneto, but the mutant leader turns him down. He explains while he can understand Julian’s feelings: the X-Men have taken everything from him and then disposed of him. He states that Julian hasn’t realized what Scott has given him, the gift of time. Stating that the Mutant war would reclaim him soon enough, Magneto leaves Julian to spend the gift Scott has given him as he chooses.

Secret Invasion

When the Skrulls invade Earth, they don't expect much resistance on the West coast. They're surprised to find that the X-Men have recently relocated to San Fransisco to create a Mutant haven.Julian is among those who have joined the X-Men in their new home. Scott quickly leads those available to him in a counteroffensive against the Skrulls. Julian does his part against the skrulls, listening intently when Cyclops debriefs them on the Skrulls and on their strategy. He then joins the X-Men in their guerrilla war against the skrulls.

Abduction

Along with Boom-Boom and Surge, Hellion was abducted by the so called Leper Queen and her followers. The three abducted mutants have been injected with a modified Legacy Virus which is notorious in killing notable mutants in the Marvel Universe. They were injected this virus to become bio-bombs and were sent to United Nations Building believing that this tragedy would cause humans to clamp down on mutant rights. However, Surge and Hellion were luckily teleported away by the X-Force but Boom-Boom was left with the Leper Queen since they have teleported before taking Tabitha away. It then caused the death of Tabitha Smith.

Powers

Powers
Powers

Hellion is a highly skilled telekinetic whose uses his abilities to fly at subsonic speeds, generate telekinetic force barriers, fire telekinetic force blasts, and lift things weighing multiple tons. He was able to simultaneously carry the Blackbird, while tunneling through over a mile and a half of tunnel. Julian has also shown that he has a huge amount of untapped potential. After the New X-Men fought Nimrod and X-23 needed medical care, Emma Frost unlocked some of this potential so Hellion could get her to the mansion in time. He was able to travel from Dallas, Texas to New York in mere seconds, plowing through a Sentinel upon arrival before stopping. That's around 1400 miles in just a few seconds. Since then, Hellion's powers have lowered some, but they are still much higher than before. As a result, he has very little fine control over his telekinesis. At one point, he tried to lift a paper clip and accidentally blew a hole through the floor of the Danger Room. When Hellion uses his powers, the telekinetic energy he creates often glows a visible green. He also seems to prefer having the telekinetic energy flow from his hands rather than directly from his mind.
